The Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in AD 889 on the remains of Roman fortifications, and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-13th century by the Moorish emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current palace and walls. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. After the conclusion of the Christian Reconquista in 1492, the site became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella. University of Granada Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación • Example from Katia Caballero(Vicedecanade Internacionalización): I learned a lot of English grammar and vocabulary in school, butwhen I finished highschool I wasincapabletospeak it, becausewedid not use the language in a practical way). And becausewehaveonlyonegroup, the students whoareadmitted in this bilingual grouphavehighestgrades in comparisonwith the rest of groupstaught in Spanish.
University of Granada Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación • There are many students who want to belong to the bilangual group, but only a few (around 60) have the opportunity; they are selected according to the grade obtained in "Bachillerato (2 last year of high school)"+"the exam for having access to University). We would be happy if we could create new bilingual groups, but we need professors that speaks good English.
University of Granada Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación • Onlythosewhoteach English and some of the youngestteacherswhobelongtootherdepartmentsareabletoteach in English. • Today it is not a requirementtohavegrades in English in order tobecomeemployee of the University of Granada, so creating new bilangualgroupswill be a slow process. It is a question of time.
University of Granada Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación • As soon as the new generations thatarestudying in bilingual schoolsarrivesto the University (theyare starting toarrivenow), I am sure the University willchangeits policy of employing new Teachers. • All the teacherswho accept thischallengearevery happy because it is being a reallygood and enrichingexperience for us.
University of Granada Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación • We still have a long wayto go, butweareverymotivated and I know it has a greatvalue for our students, for us and for the University. • For me the next step would be topromote the internationalisation of the curriculum (cooperationwithother institutions to make our students worktogether) and a more programmed exchange of teachers.
University of Granada Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación • I will try to do it as much as I can, although the paperwork in the office and my othertwofunctions (teacher and researcher). • Javier Villoriawas the mainresponsible for creating the bilingual group. He is now the Dean of the Faculty. villoria@ugr.es.
