Granada. History. Granada was originally known as Ilbyr during the time it was settled by its original native tribes. The Romans built their own city and called it Illibris. The Arabs in the 8 th Century claimed the area and gave the city its current name, Granada.

  2. History • Granada was originally known as Ilbyr during the time it was settled by its original native tribes. • The Romans built their own city and called it Illibris. • The Arabs in the 8th Century claimed the area and gave the city its current name, Granada. • It was the last Muslim city in Spain in 1492, when it was taken by Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand.

  3. Alhambra • In the 13th and 14th Century it was a palace, a citadel, a fortress, the home of high government officials, servants of the court, and elite soldiers. • At the center stands the palace of Charles V, built during the Spanish Renaissance.

  4. El Generalife

  5. The Cathedral Contains the Royal Chapel, the tombs of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

  6. Economy • Predominately agricultural. • Grow cereals, sugarcane, tobacco, olive trees, oranges, lemons, figs, almonds, and pomegranates. • There is also lead mining and the production of iron ore.
