I would recommend this book to anyoneBy MFirst There Was Forever reminded me of how complicated being young was, and how those intense emotions associated with "growing up" never really fade away. As a 30 year old (and native Angeleno), Lima represents so much more than just a version of my former self. She represents the point in one's life where the realization that nothing is clear cut, black or white,

  2. or compartmentizable, is actually liberating and empowering. High school forces you to self categorize, self identify, and self criticize. With this book, Juliana is able to eloquently draw you into the normalcy of being a teenager, and reminds you that despite the time, space, and technology that differentiate Lima's social experience from, say, The Breakfast Club, that this specific period in our lives, coming of age, forming of self, will always, somehow, be the same.I would recommend this book to anyone, to my other 30-something year olds, and young adults a like.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A captivating and beautifully written storyBy FiktshunJuliana Romanos FIRST THERE WAS FOREVER is captivating and beautifully written, a blend of sad and sweet, and with this wonderful, haunting quality to it deriving from the way the author uses her words to describe what her character Lima is seeing and feeling. Its a story about friendship and love, growing up and growing apart, having to make hard choices, and facing the consequences of those decisions. Its a story thats light enough to be the perfect summer read and weighty enough to be a memorable one.Ever since school started Lima has felt like shes been losing her best friend. Hailey is spending more time with Skyler and less time with her, doing things she doesnt feel like doing, and saying things that dont feel at all like something a friend would say. So when Haileys long-time crush, Nate Reed, starts to pay attention to her and not Hailey, she doesnt push him away far enough. Or keep him away.As long as they are just friends and Hailey isnt acting like one, she could sort of convince herself she isnt doing anything wrong. But when things with Nate turn into something more and Hailey suddenly wants to be friends again, she cant continue to lie to herself. Or to Hailey. Shell have to come clean or break things off with Nate and in doing so risk losing one or both of them.Author Juliana Romano created a story that goes beyond the typical girl falls in love with best friends love interest, betrays best friend, loses best friend plot. Her main character, Lima, is interesting and fascinating and unique. The way she sees herself, sees others, and looks at life is refreshingly different. There is something more mature and yet more innocent, more introspective, more thoughtful, more centered about her. Shes not someone whos chasing popularity or following the crowd or obsessed with her looks. Shes genuine and down to earth, but flawed just enough to be relatable and still very much likable. The author introduces a few other quirky and intriguing and glamorous characters readers will want to get know. She paints the most gorgeous pictures that invite readers into her story and make them get lost there for awhile. She gives them something to think about while theyre there, with the decisions Lima makes and doesnt make. And she makes them sympathize with her character for what she risks losing, what she has lost, and what can never be undone.FIRST THERE WAS FOREVER will grab hold instantly, has a quick pace, delivers an emotional and heartfelt story that is both sweet and bittersweet, has an array of appealing characters, and some truly fantastic writing. For fans of the genre and for those looking for an enchanting and relatable and engaging read, Juliana Romanos debut is a story not to be missed.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent writing and a realistic compelling storyBy Katherine YuhasReading the words of Lima, that narrator are like talking with your best friend. She is a likeable realistic character and her thoughts and emotions are genuine. The basic storyline of friendships that end as friends grow up and develop different interests is a story so many readers will relate to and enjoy seeing examined in such honest detail. The interactions between Lima and Nate are spot on and they actually seem like teenagers, not 30-year-olds showing up in a young adult book. The field of young adult literature seems filled with dystopian worlds and supernatural characters and it is a joy to read a story about a sweet, smart, human girl coming of age. * "Fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han wont want to miss this sensitive exploration of romantic and platonic relationships in flux."Lima and Hailey have always been best friends: Lima shy and sensitive, Hailey funny and free- spirited. But Hailey abandons Lima to party with the popular kids and pursue Nate, her disinterested crush. As their friendship falters, Lima and Nate begin spending more time together. And before Lima knows what shes feeling, she and Nate do something irreversible. Something that would hurt Hailey....if she knew it happened.Lima thinks shes saving her friendship by lying, but shes only buying time. As the secrets stack up, Lima is forced to make a choice: between her best friend forever, and the boy who wasnt meant to be hers.*Publishers Weekly, starred review From School Library JournalGr 9 UpSophomore year should be the best yet for lifelong Malibu friends Lima and Hailey, but new friends and old crushes work together to make their relationship more complicated than either of the girls could have imagined. Obsessed with her long time crush, Nate, but feeling little support from Lima, Hailey begins to leave Lima behind in search of more worldly ways to spend her weekends. Left on her own, Lima also branches out on the friendship scene, finding herself spending time with two fabulously mysterious upperclassmen, as well as with Hailey's obsession, Nate. As the year progresses, the chasm between the two girls only grows larger, fueled by several emotional exchanges that cut both teens to the quick; however, the death nell of their relationship comes in Lima's decision to hide her newfound feelings for Nate from her forever friend. Romano presents a story of adolescents growing up against the backdrop of a picture perfect California that may seem the stuff of dreams to many readers. It is unfortunate that the permissive parenting and gratuitous underage drinking in the plot take a more prominent role in a narrative that addresses "the first time" with such sensitivity and grace. An additional purchase.Colleen S. Banick, Westport Public Schools, CT * "Fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han wont want to miss
