  1. Bridge Inspection: An Innovative Approach to Bridge Preservation

  2. Regular bridge inspection is a critical component of bridge upkeep that ensures the safety of all those using the public transportation systems such as highways, subways, and buses. For this purpose, bridge foundations and supporting structures are thoroughly checked on a regular basis for any form of damage. Whenever a bridge is structurally sound, it is necessary to perform yearly bridge maintenance in order to prevent major accident events. However, not all bridges are inspected on a regular basis. For these bridges, there are specific Bridge Preservation techniques that are performed in order to keep them in good condition while extending the lifespan of the structure. A research program is initiated whenever a new bridge is to be constructed. This research program is implemented so that the bridge's stability can be analyzed according to prevailing conditions. For this, a bridge inspection team is sent to the location where the bridge will be submerged to carry out the required checks. This research program also involves a thorough analysis of the water's resistance to load, as well as its thermal conductivity. By studying these two categories, the bridge preservationists find a way to make best use of available technology transfer methods.

  3. Methods - One method that is used extensively is radar inspection. This is carried out by sending out small radar waves to detect any form of wear or damage on the structure. If the damage detected is minor enough, the repair work can be performed on-site without too much disturbance to the environment. However, if the damage is severe, it is necessary to anchor the structure until the repair work is done. For this reason, the major portion of the structure will never be immersed in the water. However, smaller vessels such as barges may undergo an extended period of inspection under Bridge preservations while they are docked at the port or terminal. Another technique used for bridge inspection is the use of thermographic instruments. These instruments are capable of detecting even the smallest amounts of thermal conductivity variations in a material. As a result, the bridge preservationists determine if a material is still usable and appropriate for use. The thermographs can also detect any signs of weakening caused by corrosion of a specific material. Once these findings are determined, the appropriate solution will be applied.

  4. Types - There are many different types of New York bridge inspections. Most of them are designed for highways where the defects can be prevented from causing significant harm to vehicles or to the environment. However, smaller structures like parking lots and retaining walls can be subjected to a wide variety of bridge inspections in order to identify the possible deterioration of the structure. This can greatly help prevent the deterioration or collapse of such structures, which can have a major impact on nearby residents, as well as on transportation systems that use the highway. Although this kind of technology has been around for quite some time now, there are still many things that need to be improved upon before such instruments can become more effective and useful. Some of these enhancements can be achieved by simply improving the conditions of the observation sites. In other cases, more advanced diagnostic tools will be required. With the advent of advanced software and computer applications, however, this is no longer something that would be considered too difficult to achieve. As technology improves, the Bridge Inspection process will surely become even more efficient and it will eventually be used for all kinds of structures, from residential roads to busy highways.
