  1. The Food Chain By: Tiffany Short CMP/555 http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-for-kids/0162-food-chains.php

  2. Standards • CURRICULUM STANDARDSOhio Standards:LIFE SCIENCESDiversity and Independence of life3. Trace the organization of simple food chains and food webs (e.g., producers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and decomposers)4. Summarize that organisms can survive only in ecosystems in which their needs can be met (e.g., food, water, shelter, air, carrying capacity and waste disposal). The world has different ecosystems and distinct ecosystems support the lives of different types of organisms.5. Support how an organism's patterns of behavior are related to the nature of that organism's ecosystem, including the kinds and numbers of other organisms present, the availability of food and resources, and the changing physical characteristics of the ecosystem. • TECHNOLOGY STANDARDSNETS*S Standards:1. Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.3. Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.4. Students use critical-thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.

  3. Learning Objectives 1. Given teacher direction and instruction the learner will be informed about food chains and review their own background knowledge (that was previously covered) on ecosystems.2. The learner will give attention to and participate in the SmartBoard activity for class participation and to indicate if the material that is being covered is being learned.3. The learner will illustrate their understanding of food chains by drawing a food chain and label it appropriately for homework on a piece of notebook paper with their own choice of coloring devices as long as it is neat. When they return this activity they will go to the following website http://my.hrw.com/nsmedia/intgos/html/PDFs/Process_or_Cycle_Chart.pdf (Bodin) and transfer their food chain on there by typing and explaining why it is positioned in that particular place. This will let me know that they know a producer is first after receiving energy from the sun, then come the consumers.4. The learner will participate in an interactive crossword puzzle online provided by the teacher at http://www.vtaide.com/png/foodchains-puzzle.htm (Wong, 2005). At the bottom of this crossword there is a review called “food chains for younger students” that student’s will first review and complete activities. When they are finished with each, the teacher will come around and check their progress.5. The learner will demonstrate their understanding of food chains by creating a brochure, newspaper, booklet, or flyer on the computer to show the information learned during this unit being given the following website: http://interactives.mped.org/view_interactive.aspx?id=110&title= (Verizon Foundation, 2012)6. The learner will be evaluated on their knowledge of the material through an online activity that will determine their test grade. Also, to be evaluated they will explain how humans are involved in the food chain process and determine what all could be illustrated to show this.

  4.  First, Let’s Review, What is an Ecosystem?(this is a discussion so give a few seconds so that students have time to discuss, more will pop up) • The plants and animals that are found in a particular location are referred to as an ecosystem. These plants and animals depend on each other to survive. In a delicate balance, these life forms help to sustain one another in regular patterns. Disruptions to an ecosystem can be disastrous to all organisms within the ecosystem Kidsgeo.com Geology for Kids (2012). Geology for Kids, The Study of our Earth. 5. Intro to Food Chains for Students • For the next part, I will introduce Food Chains by way of: http://exchange.smarttech.com/search.html?q=food+chain&subject=All+subjects&grade=Grade+5&region=en_US Dhindsa, Jeet & KristenNS. (n.d.). Smart Exchange. Retrieved March 2012, from Smart Exchange: http://exchange.smarttech.com/search?q=food+chain&subject=All+subjects&grade=Grade+5&region=en_US&&from=reg • Scroll down to the one titled “food” (it has a yellow background (it will not allow me to copy it on here) • It may have you open in Notebook express—if your computer will not allow you, download the capabilities—it will take a minute to load • Here is a username: tnorthro@mail.mvnu.edu and Password:CMP555 • This will take you about 10 minutes, but in a lesson, as a teacher we can make it 15 or longer! (DO NOT CLOSE THE MAIN SITE, YOU WILL NEED IT AGAIN) • On page 7 the columns are CARNIVORE HERBIVORE AND OMNIVORE.. I was having trouble with this!! • *** From here on, click to advance slides  ***

  6. SmartTech Lesson Continued • After finishing the previous lesson, we will then go to the same site (username tnorthro@Mail.mvnu.edu Passwd: CMP555) and click on the purple background lesson titled “Food Chain.” • For this one, do not download it, only click the “click to preview” to get and idea

  7. Make Your Own Food Chain! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/frellnik/PLANETS/sun.jpg http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg218/damioli/grazing-cow-1b.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd445/cpaigel1107/Flowers/flower.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t245/brownkid01/Burger.jpg Now, draw your own! How many links can you come up with?

  8. Now go to the following website on your laptop (from the Portable Library) • http://my.hrw.com/nsmedia/intgos/html/PDFs/Process_or_Cycle_Chart.pdf • transfer your food chain on here by typing and explaining why you drew your drawing the way you did and the order it is in.

  9. Interactive Crossword Puzzle Activity • First go to http://www.tgfl.org.uk/tgfl/custom/resources_ftp/netmedia_ll/ks1/science/hamshall/food_chains/index.htm on your individual laptops and complete all three tasks • When all 3 tasks are complete go to http://www.vtaide.com/png/foodchains-puzzle.htm , do the puzzle and put your hand up when finished

  10.  Your Final Learning Task!!  • You will demonstrate your understanding of food chains by creating a brochure, newspaper, booklet, or flyer (your pick) on the your laptop at the following website: http://interactives.mped.org/view_interactive.aspx?id=110&title= • MAKE SURE TO GIVE PLENTY OF INFORMATION SO THAT IF A STRANGER ON THE STREET FOUND THIS THEY WOULD UNDERSTAND IT!

  11. Quiz Time! • Go to the following website: http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078617022/student_view0/unit5/chapter25/section_3_self-check_quiz-eng_.html When you finish raise your hand and when the teacher comes over click “check answers”—the teacher will then get your score.
