  1. Food Chain? The Food Chain!! By: Krysten House & Mary Gill By: Mary Gill and Krysten House!

  2. Essential Question!!! How can our understanding of the food chain help us make good decisions about everyday life?

  3. Objectives! • Students will learn about the food chain functions and how it is important to our everyday lives. • Students will learn what the effects would be if a part of the food chain was missing.

  4. Words You Need To Know!! Food Chain - a sequence of organisms in an ecosystem in which each species is the food of the next member of the chain Carnivore – An animal that only eats meat. Omnivore – An animal that eats both plants and animals. Herbivore – An animal that only eats plants. Predator – An animal that hunts another animal. Prey – An animal that is being hunted.

  5. Food Chain? • A food chain is a sequence of organisms in an ecosystem in which each species is the food of the next member of the chain. Wait…what? Basically…A food chain is a chain of animals where one animal is food for another.

  6. Carnivore!! • Carnivore – An animal that only eats meat. • Carnivores are rarely ever at the bottom of the food chain. Wolf! Lion! Bobcat! Eagle! Examples!!!

  7. Herbivore!! • An animal that only eats plants. • Herbivores are always at the very bottom of the food chain, because they do not eat any other animal. Cow!! Grasshopper!! Rabbit!! Deer!!

  8. Omnivore!! • An animal that eats both plants and animals. • Normally an omnivore can be found anywhere in the food chain, from the bottom to the top. Bear!! Fish!! Snake!! Frog!!

  9. Predator!! Prey!! • An animal that hunts another animal. • Examples: • -A Bear could be a predator to a fish. • -A Fish could be a predator to another fish. • An animal that is being hunted. • Examples: • -A Fish is the prey for the bear. • -A fish could be prey to another fish. • An animal can be both a predator and a prey.

  10. What would happen if one certain group of animals went extinct? • If we went around killing all of the grasshoppers, and there were no grasshoppers left, what would happen to the animals that rely on them for food? There would be no more frogs. Why? There would be no more eagles. Why?

  11. Review Time! What is a Omnivore? What is a predator? 3. Where are Herbivores most likely found on the food chain? Build the food chain!

  12. Put it to the test! Lets build your own food chain!! Put the index cards you are handed with animals on them in order of the food chain. Owl Mice Sun Snake Grass

  13. You tell me! How can our understanding of the food chain help us make good decisions about everyday life?
