  1. Good evening and welcome to 4th grade. We would like to take this time to welcome you and your child to Wilder Elementary and the 4th grade team. We’re sure you are as excited as we are about the upcoming year. It’s going to be great, and we’re looking forward to getting to know both you and your child. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We will return any messages as soon as we can.

  2. School begins at 8:00 a.m. each day. Students are tardy at 8:01. Mrs. Hopkins will monitor this daily for issue of inclement weather or congested traffic conditions. We will adjust accordingly. • Dress Code: Please reference the AISD dress code for students. Parents will receive phone calls from the front office staff if students are in violation of any part of this code. • Parent Conferences are being scheduled by teachers now. If you have specific questions or concerns about your child’s progress, please email them to schedule a conference

  4. Buddy Study (Word Study):Every Friday the Buddy Study packet is due with a parent signature. • Book Adventure: A note went home last month with dates and points expected for each month. Your child has an opportunity to take quizzes every week when we visit the computer lab, or they can take quizzes at home. • Projects: A project will be assigned once every 9 weeks. This will typically be a reading project. The first project went home last week. My Reading Life will be due on Tuesday, October 15th.

  7. Through out the year we will be studying various genres of reading. We will cover many areas within each genre: • Text structure and features • Author’s purpose • Theme • Character traits • Main idea • Summary • Point of view

  8. Through out the year we will be reviewing what we learned in word study in previous years and building on that knowledge. This will help in our reading and writing skills. • High Frequency Words • Forming plurals • Prefixes/Suffixes • Contractions • Synonyms/Antonyms • Irregular nouns/verbs • Greek and Latin roots • Grammar and Conventions

  9. This year we will be focusing on two forms of writing… Expository and Narrative essay’s Within these essays we will be working on adding: • Figurative language • Leads and Conclusions • Word choice • Ba-da-bing (colorful language) • Sensory details
