The People of France thought the Church was too Powerful. • Church was exempt from taxes and had their own court system. • People wanted Individual freedoms • Freedom of Expression and Right to decide destiny • Revolutionaries thought the Church has accumulated to much wealth • Excessive Taxes made the Church rich Why was it passed?
How did the church change in its role with the government? • State Deputies passed the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1980 • It said that the clergy members would be paid for their services by the government. • Matched up a diocese (a church district) with a new geographic department • Most important, the priests and bishops had to be elected by the people • All of Clergy had to swear an oath of allegiance to France
A system of public education was made • Primary and secondary schools were created, and education became available to all. • An National Arts and Science Institute was established • Marriage were reformed and divorces were legalized • A new calendar and new holidays were implemented How did reform continue throughout France?
Christianity could not be eradicated by the government • The Catholic Church did not gain as much power again, only a fraction of it was recovered. • The clergy paid more attention to the needs of its members Did these changes have a lasting impact in France?
