AREA OF SQUARES AND RECTANGLES WELCOME MR. J. AREVALO 5TH GRADE TEACHER DOOL SCHOOL CALEXICO
Introduction • These slides are to inform you how important it is for students to be able to read and use formulas.
Allow students to practice finding the area of squares and rectangles. CUS
Topics of Discussion • The two main ideas to teach are: • A. Formula for finding area of a Square. Formula for finding the area of a rectangle
Topic One • This topic is to teach children how to find the area of a square and rectangle. • Children need to know how to read formulas for finding answers on mathematical problems. • All should know how to calculate these formulas.
Topic Two Now we can figure out how much it’s going to cost us to put a new rug in our house. We just have to figure out the square footage, and how much a square foot. • The area of a square or a rectangle is found by multiplying the length by the height. 5 Area =lxh 5 3 Area = l x h 12
DETAILS • AREA OF A SQUARE IS EQUAL TO HEIGHT TIMES LENGTH. • AREA OF A RECTANGLE IS EQUAL TO HEIGHT TIMES LENGTH. EXAMPLE 2 AREA = 2 X 2=4 1 AREA=5 X 1=5 2 5
Real Life • If you have a trailer that measures 5 feet wide by 12 feet long, how much ply wood will you need to plank it?
What This Means • It is important for all children to be able to use formulas in real life situations. • All students should memorize the formula for finding the area. • All students should have had the opportunity to work out several problems.
SUMMARY • Children need plenty of examples to learn. • Children need to work in teams. • Children need visuals. • Children need real life situations to be meaningful.
