The Job of Zero Zero has an important job to do.
The Job of Zero • Zero is generally used as a PLACE HOLDER. • It changes the name of numbers depending on where it sits and how many there are.
Zero changes names of numbers Can you name these numbers? • 3,210.09 • 321.009 • 321,009 • 32,100.9
Zero changes names of numbers Can you name these numbers? • 3,210.09 • 321.009 • 321,009 • 32,100.9 • Three thousand Two Hundred Ten and Nine Hundredths • Three Hundred Twenty-One and Nine Thousandths • Three Hundred Twenty-One Thousand, Nine • Thirty Two Thousand, One Hundred and Nine Tenths.
Vocabulary Factor 2 x 6= Numbers being multiplied together • Product 12 The answer to a Multiplication problem.
Multiplying with Zero • What is anything times 1? • 1x0=0 • 1x 10=10 • 1x100=100 • 1x1,000=1,000 Anything times 1 equals itself: • 1x0=0 • 1x 10=10 • 1x100=100 • 1x1,000=1,000
Zero Patterns • What is the product of any number times 0? 0x0 10x0 100x0 The product of each of these factors being multiplied together is 0: 0x0=0 10x0=0 100x0=0
Multiplying Zero • Lets look at multiplying Zero at the end of a number: We start with Basic Facts. 2x1=2
Multiplying Zero • Basic Pattern of Facts • Times 10 • Times 100 • Times 1000 • 2 x 1 = 2 • 2 x 10 = 20 • 2 x 100 = 200 • 2 x 1,000 = 2,000 FYI: Follow the zeroes, however many zeroes the factors have at the end, is the same amount of zeroes that should be dropped to the back of the product.
Multiplying Zero • Basic Fact Pattern • Times multiple of 10 • Times multiple100 • Times multiple of 1000 • 5 x 3 = 15 • 5 x 30 = 150 • 5 x 300 =1,500 • 5 x 3,000 = 15,000 FYI: Follow the zeroes, however many zeroes the factors have at the end, is the same amount of zeroes that should be dropped to the back of the product.
Multiplying Zero • Basic Fact Pattern • Times multiple of 10 • Times multiple100 • Times multiple of 1000 • 7 x 6 = 42 • 7 x 60 = 420 • 7 x 600 = 4,200 • 7 x 6,000 = 42,000 FYI: Follow the zeroes, however many zeroes the factors have at the end, is the same amount of zeroes that should be dropped to the back of the product.
Multiplying Zero • Basic Fact Pattern • Times multiple of 10 • Times multiple100 • Times multiple of 1000 • 5 x 3 = 15 • 50 x 3 = 150 • 50 x 30 = 1,500 • 500 x 30 = 15,000 FYI: Follow the zeroes, however many zeroes the factors have at the end, is the same amount of zeroes that should be dropped to the back of the product.

Game Time Groups of Two or teams of four alternate turns in 2s • Use index cards to create 2 sets of cards each numbered 1-9. (Shuffle Cards- Mix well) • Create a cube out of paper or use pre-labeled cubes: 10, 10, 100, 100, 1000, 1000. • Each person chooses two cards. • Multiply the digits on the two chosen cards to find the product. • Roll the dice. • Multiply the product on #4 by the value the die landed on. • Two members race to find as many factors of the product of #6 as possible in 1-2 minutes. • The rest of the players check for accuracy.
