Type of Disease: • The Ebola virus is classified under the Filovirus family. • There are also four types of the Ebola virus: Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan, Ebola-Ivory Coast(Tai), and Ebola-Reston.
Description of Disease: • Severe fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates
History of Disease: • 1st outbreak infected over 284 people, 53% mortality rate (1976) • 2ND outbreak 88% mortality rate, infected 318 people • 3rd strain (1989) infected monkeys were imported into Reston, Virginia, from Mindanao in the Philippines • Natural reservoir was never identified
Symptoms: First: Followed By: • Fever • Headaches • Joint aches • Muscle aches • Sore throat • Weakness • Diarrhea • Vomiting • Stomach pain • Rash • Red eyes • Hiccups • Internal/external bleeding
Transmission of Disease: • Ebola is spread from human to human • Occurs through direct contact with patients who have Ebola, or direct contact with their body fluids • Occurs most often when an infected person is in the late stages of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
Where it originated: • Ebola got it’s name from a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formally Zaire), in Africa, where it was first recognized
Cures or Treatments: • There is no treatment for Ebola • Patients just have to take therapy • Patients usually die in the early stages of Ebola
