  1. Epic Elmo: A Most Unusual Epic Hero Elmo is the hero of the famous epic poem, “Elmo in Grouchland”

  2. Elmo in GrouchlandThe Epic Poem • In “Elmo in Grouchland,” we are introduced to Sir Elmo, a famous knight monster who is charged with the duty of traveling to Grouchland to rescue Princess Zoe.

  3. While attempting to rescue the princess, he must battle the forces of evil Kevin Spacey. At first, Elmo believes he must take on this evil force by himself!

  4. He is soon helped by many magical creatures, and Epic Elmo joins forces with them to defeat the evil Kevin Spacey.

  5. By using his supernatural silliness abilities, Epic Elmo is able to drive Evil Kevin Spacey completely mad, and incapable of ruling Grouchland any more. The people of Grouchland are spared from the violent temper of Evil Kevin Spacey, and Princess Zoe is released from his prison, free to return home with Epic Elmo.

  6. Why is Epic Elmo an Epic Hero? • To begin with, his mother was a royal virgin, and his father, King Elmut, ruled Sesame Street. • He was conceived in Big Bird’s nest on February 29th. • For fear he would be killed by people annoyed by his supersonic laughter, they sent him away to be raised by Honkers.

  7. Years later, when he was five, he found a Black Letter E, which everyone knows is a sign that you are a Prince. He asked his Honker parents about this, and they revealed his true identity.

  8. Epic Elmo returned to Sesame Street, where with the help of SuperGrover, he overpowered the Tweedlebugs and regained supreme power, becoming everyone’s favorite puppet once again. (He was so great, in fact, some say he was the son of the great God Henson!)

  9. He becomes king, and gives everyone tiny dolls that laugh just like him! He rules for many years(It is during this time he journeys to Grouchland and rescues Princess Zoe).

  10. Then…disaster struck. Elmo forgets to give thanks to the great god Henson. Before Lord Henson can destroy him, Elmo flees Sesame Street on his magic firetruck, never to be seen again.

  11. What qualities of an Epic hero does Epic Elmo display, you ask? To begin, Epic Elmo had strong Boyscout Values. • He showed loyalty to his people by risking his life to rescue Princess Zoe. • He showed integrity by admitting he had a strange passion for fish, and accepted counseling to get over this problem. • He showed honesty by revealing to his people he had offended Lord Henson, and abandoned his thrown without argument.

  12. He represented his Sesame Culture by 1.) perpetually acting like a three-year-old, 2.) magically making friends with everyone he meets, and 3.) expecting that whining will always get his way

  13. He goes on a great quest to Grouchland to rescue Zoe. He is able to defeat evil Kevin Spacey usnig his supernatural laughter, and supernatural ability to make friends with everyone. When he returns with her, they marry!

  14. Epic Elmo’s Epic Hero Cycle • While in Grouchland, Elmo is tested by Evil Kevin Spacey’s henchman, CookieMonster, who feeds him cookies to try and make him throw up. It didn’t work! • He is also tortured by Evil Kevin Spacey himself, who yells “You have no friends!!” over and over. Elmo never stopped laughing!

  15. He is helped by many magical creatures!

  16. He leaves Sesame Street, entering Grouchland through Oscar’s magic trashcan. • No monster had ever traveled there and come back alive!!

  17. While being tortured by Evil Kevin Spacey, (who hung him upside down and tried to make him cry), he almost gives in, and stops laughing.

  18. When he saw Princess Zoe, he was resurrected, and gained new strength to resist Evil Kevin Spacey’s torture. His supernatural laughter eventually blew out Evil Kevin Spacey’s eardrums, driving him mad, and Elmo escaped, Zoe following quickly behind him.

  19. When Epic Elmo and Princess Zoe returned to Sesame Street, they destroyed the garbage can!! He gains restitution: he seals the world off from Grouchland and Evil Kevin Spacey forever! A big celebration is held!

  20. Why is the famous poem “Elmo in Grouchland” considered an epic? There is a great deal of repetition: • Many times, the phrase, “Elmo Loves You!” is repeated…as well as “That Tickles!” • Epic Elmo often breaks into song…repeating the same strange mantras over and over… • Evil Kevin Spacey often says, “Stop Your Laugh, or I’ll Chop You in Half!”

  21. Epithets, Digressions and Epic Similes • Though no Epic Similes are present, there are many Epithets, including…Epic Elmo, Furry Red Monster KingSuper Grover, Flying MenaceEvil Kevin Spacey, Happy KillerOverstuffed, Overjoyed Cookie Monster • There are many digressions…for instance, as he is torturing Epic Elmo, Evil Kevin Spacey launches into a long story of how, when he was five, someone stole his favorite blanky.

  22. HIGH STYLE The language of this epic poem is advanced and varied…some words are even three syllables long!! EX: Elmo was very interested in gaining forgiveness from his countrymen. IN MEDIAS RESThe story of Elmo in Grouchland begins with Elmo having already returned to his kingdom. He tells a visiting ruler of another kingdom—the Count von Count—the story of his rescuing the Princess Zoe from Evil Kevin Spacey. Other Epic Poem Qualities

  23. CALLS UPON A MUSE Elmo calls upon the musical muse Rosita to bless him before he begins telling his story. PRESENTS EPIC QUESTIONSThe epic question quickly becomes clear…will Epic Elmo be able to rescue Princess Zoe from the horrible clutches of Evil Kevin Spacey??? EPIC INVOCATION

  24. And of course…it contains Epic Elmo, the greatest Epic Hero of all Time!!
