Safe Use Of Systemic Anti-cancer Therapy (SACT)Workshop For Assessors
Aim • To prepare assessors to become familiar with tools and approaches that support a consistent approach to SACT competency assessment
Learning Outcomes • Increase familiarity with NES Education and Training Framework for the Safe Use of SACT • Support work-based learning in the context of SACT competency assessment • Use the NES tools and approaches to competently undertake consistent assessments • Identify sources of help and support • Critically analyse the value of the tools and approaches • Display increased confidence in fulfilling the assessor role
SACT Education & Training Framework • Replaces the ‘Workforce Education and Training Framework for the Safe Use of Cytotoxic Medicines (NES, 2007) • Supports the implementation of CEL30 (2012) • Provides foundation for a consistent approach to education and training • Applicable across all care settings including the home • Applicable to all routes of administration
Rationale • Demand for SACT services continues to increase • Wider range of healthcare workers involved • The need for a nationally recognised standard of education and competence recognised (Royal College of Nursing, 1998) • CEL30 (2012) highlights need for development of education & training programmes, including competencies and methods of assessment, for all healthcare workers involved in delivery of SACT services
The Framework 4 levels: • Informed Practice • Skilled Practice • Enhanced Practice • Expertise in Practice
Based on a pathway through SACT: Safe handling Preparing for treatment Starting and continuing treatment Support after treatment
Role of the Assessor • Promote best practice within own area of practice • Work with senior manager to agree an action plan to ensure competency assessment of all relevant staff within area of practice • Undertake formal assessments of competency • Maintain accurate records • Provide support and advice to staff • Provide additional support to individuals who have difficulty achieving competence. • Keep senior manager/education provider up to date with progress as appropriate
SACT record of achievement • Competencies based on NES Education & Training Framework • Recognises the different levels of responsibility and involvement • Identifies the knowledge, skills and behaviours required at each of four levels • Competencies at each level are incremental • Levels define the expertise and responsibility specific to the individuals’ role and involvement with cytotoxic SACT and not their seniority within their profession
Using the SACT record of achievement • Supervised practise/ direct observation • Questioning and discussion • Simulated exercises/ scenarios • Multi-source feedback (MSF) • Checklists
Discussion • Who assesses? • Delegation to mentors/ supervisors/ MSF • Deciding which competencies are applicable • When are people ready to be assessed/ what needs to be in place? • Self assessment • Using checklists • How do you ask/ inform patients? • How do you know a competency is achieved?
Group work • Ensuring consistency • Using questioning • Using reflection • Giving feedback
Discussion • How do you assess competency and ensure consistency now? • What challenging situations have you encountered when assessing? How did you manage them? • How do you manage people who have not achieved the competencies?
