Introduction-1 • These words are part of the song of Deborah and Barak • Praising God and recounting the victory He had given them over Sisera and the Canaanites • V23 says “curse Meroz” • Meroz was a town in northern Palestine • Its exact location is now unknown • The people of Meroz were cursed by the angel of the LORD
Introduction-2 • They were not cursed for idolatry or immorality • They knew their brethren were in danger, they could have gone to battle with them, but they did nothing to help them against the enemy • Because neglect is such a common sin, some might question the sinfulness of it • But there are many warnings against it in the scriptures • This is one of several examples of those condemned for it
Neglect of Duty-1 • The people of Meroz were Israelites • They had a duty to help their brethren which they failed to do • In the parable of the talents, Jesus told of servants who received different amounts of money from their master- Mt. 25:15 • The servants who received 5 talents and 2 talents gained as much as they had received • Both were commended for their faithfulness
Neglect of Duty-2 • The servant who received one talent buried it and returned it to his master • He knew what his master wanted him to do, and he had the same opportunities as the other two servants • He was called a wicked and lazy servant because he did nothing with his master’s money- V26 • Because of his neglect, he was cast into outer darkness- V30 • Following Christ means working for Him- Eph. 2:10
Neglect of Others-1 • We have a responsibility to do good to all people- Gal. 6:10 • In the story of the good Samaritan, the priest and the Levite both saw the wounded man but passed on the other side- Lk. 10:31-32 • They both failed to show love for their neighbor by helping him • The only sin charge against the rich man in Lk. 16 was that he neglected the beggar, Lazarus, who was laid at his gate • He found himself in torment because of his neglect
Neglect of Others-2 • In Mt. 25:31-46 Jesus gives us a picture of the final judgment • He says that he will separate people as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats- V32 • Those sheep who will be blessed are those who minister to those in need around them • The goats will be cursed for neglecting to help their neighbors • We minister to Christ when we help our neighbors • Those who neglect others do not love God- I Jn. 3:17
Neglect of Our Soul-1 • Our soul or spirit is our most valuable possession- Mt. 16:26 • It will continue to exist when it is separated from our physical body • It should receive our greatest attention • It needs spiritual nourishment- I Pet. 2:2 • It needs spiritual exercise- I Tim. 4:8 • It needs to grow in grace, knowledge and the likeness of Christ- II Pet. 3:18 & Lk. 6:40 • To prepare for an eternity with Him in Heaven
Neglect of Our Soul-2 • Yet most people today are neglecting their soul • Some are involving themselves in sin which destroys the soul • Others are starving their soul by filling their lives with the trivial things of this life- recreation, entertainment and pleasure • This was one of the sins of the rich farmer in Lk. 12 • Because he pursued material things he had no treasure in heaven, and he died a spiritual pauper- V21 • We need to be sure we are laying up treasure in heaven
Neglect of Obedience-1 • The Hebrew writer asks, How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation?”- Heb. 2:3 • A salvation far greater than that under the law of Moses • He is talking about the salvation from sin that Jesus died on the cross to provide for us • The salvation contained in the gospel which Jesus and His apostles preached- Rom. 1:16 • The question implies that obedience is required to receive it
Neglect of Obedience-2 • The answer is those who neglect it will not escape condemnation • This includes christians who have drifted away from it- V1 • Those who neglect to obey the gospel will be punished with everlasting destruction- II Thess. 1:8-9 • Procrastination is the father of neglect • Good intentions are not sufficient • We must be doers of the word and not just hearers and approvers- Jas. 1:22
In Conclusion • Neglect of our responsibilities is a sin- Jas. 4:16 • Whether it involves our duty to God, others or our own soul • It is a danger to every christian • Procrastination often leads to neglect • Those who are busy serving the Lord will not be guilty of neglect- I Cor. 15:58 • Do you need to obey the gospel this morning?
