FRC Robotics Camp2011 Department of Engineering Technology Herff College of Engineering University of Memphis
Welcome • Introductions • What is US First Robotics Competition (FRC) • Typical Season • Safety! • The Camp • Relation to a “real season” • Team Organization
Daniel Kohn • Electronics and Controls • Mentor for 3 yrs (FRC) • Control Systems Advisor at Knoxville Regional 2011 • Judge FLL 2 years • Judge FTC 1 year • BEST Robotics Referee 1 year • Mentor of University Robotics Team since 2001 • Building robots since 1977
Robert Hewitt • Mechanical • CAD • Fabrication
Tom Banning • Management • Electronics • Mechanical • CAD
What is First Robotics Competition (FRC)? • F.I.R.S.T. – “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” • It is a Robotics Competition • It is a combines the excitement of sport with science and technology • Students in 9-12 grade
What is First Robotics Competition (FRC)? • 2011 stats: • 48,000 Students • 2,000 Teams • 48+ Regional Events • All 50 States + 10 other countries
Amazing Things Happen (Video)
Best Way to Describe FRC FIRST is a microcosm of a real engineering experience: “It’s a problem too big, in a time too short, with a budget too small, and a team too large.” Woodie C. Flowers MIT co-founder of and national advisor US First FRC
What you will do? • Work along side coaches and engineering mentors to design, build and program a Robot • Compete against teams from around the country • Work hard, have fun, learn real world skills
Pre Season (Aug – Dec) • Learn about Robotics • Learn how to Design (CAD) • Find Mentors • Get sponsors • Raise funds • Design your teams’ image • Create a Team Website • Promote your team
Kick Off and Build Season • Kick Off • First Sat in Jan • Competition Announcement (Show video / show previous years) • Get your Kit of Parts • Build Season (Six Weeks) • Quick Build • Design, Build, Program, Test, Practice
Competition Season • Ship Day • Competition Season • Championship
Scholarships • Over $16 Million in scholarships available last year • Open to anyone who participated in FTC or FRC • More info at: http://www.usfirst.org/aboutus/scholarships.aspx
Danger!! • Working with Power Tools • Working with Electronics • Mechanical Pinch Points • Jewelry, Long hair, Loose Cloths, Open Shoes • Gloves, Safety Glasses, Ear Protection, Other Safety Equipment
How will this week relate to the 2011-12 season • The game announcement for the camp (coming up) will be a miniature “kick off” • You will shown a “Kit of Parts (KOP)” that you will be allowed to use (although not as extensive as the full KOPs) • You will NOT have to build the basic robot base (like you will be doing at the “Quick Build”)
How will this week relate to the 2011-12 season • You will be building the additional mechanical, electrical and pneumatic system to play the game. • You will have to take the basic robot program and add to it to control your additions. • You have only a few days until competition.
How the camp will be different • You will be competing one at a time, not on a 3 team alliance. • The game will be much simpler. • The field with be much smaller. • The game pieces will be smaller. • The rules will be much simpler (one page instead of a game manual of 100’s of pages).
Team Organization Full Season Summer Camp Mechanical Design and Build Electronics and Programming • Team Managers • Mechanical (Build) Team • Drive Train • Task Mechanics • Design Team (CAD) • Programmers • Electronics • Public Relations and Communications • Drivers / Human Players
