Sleep--A Journey to the Dreamland A good sleep is the necessity of every human body. It’s not the number of hours that matter, instead, the quality of sleep in those hours’ matters a lot. If you are not having good quality sleep, you will be suffering from Insomnia later or sooner. And then, you will find yourself searching for the medicines for Insomnia. Our body functions in a systematic way in order to let us fall asleep. Let’s first understand this whole system of getting into the world of dreams. Getting into sleep is not a single stage process. You need to cross number of stages in order to go into your dreamland. Have a look at the various stages that lead you to sleep in the end. How do we sleep? •When you go to bed at night and slowly close your eyes with lights off, you actually indicate the start of the whole journey. At this point you are in quiet wakefulness stage. From here you will travel to the world of dreams by letting go all the loads off the brain. You actually oscillate between external thoughts and self referential internal thoughts. While these thoughts keep oscillating inside you, at some point you enter to the next stage i.e. transitional sleep stage. You can call it as stage 1.
•The shift from transitional to stage 1 processes very slowly. You may get hiccups that you are still awake though you are actually on your way to dreamland. The same happens to you while watching your favorite movie. You may feel that you are still awake with your eyes closed but actually you were entering the stage 2. •At this stage your brain moves to non REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Experts say, at this point you will not feel those flashbacks which gives you a sense that you are awake. There will be reduction in the perception of external stimuli too. Though you are asleep, you might hear a word or two from external world which gradually fades away. Then finally you enter the stage of deep sleep. This is the stage where you actually complete the transition and start dreaming. Thereafter, you keep on oscillating between these stages for the rest of the night.
