  1. Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: Required MAC protocol features for non-medical BAN Date Submitted: 13-05-2008 Source: Ranjeet Kumar Patro, Kiran Bynam, Giriraj Goyal, Arun Naniyat Contact: Ranjeet Kumar Patro Voice: +91- 80 - 4181 9999, E-Mail: rkp.atd@samsung.com, ranjeet.patro@gmail.com Re: Abstract: Some of the required MAC attributes are captured analyzing the non-medical traffic Purpose: To consider obtained MAC attributes for body area network MAC development Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. 4. MAC protocol should: Distinguish and prioritize the traffic based on its real-time requirements - Need of coordinator - Coordinator should have control over the order of transmission Have low-latency characteristics to support real-time behavior - Fixed bandwidth may required for CBR traffic Have contention based access for VBR traffic - Contention between real-time VBR and non-real-time VBR may degrade the performance of real-time VBR - First packet of real-time VBR may contend, have mechanism to reserve channel for other VBR packet in a flow Distinguish and treat differently packets in a real-time VBR flow Maximize utilization of the medium - No idle channel Energy consumption is critical for BAN nodes used for motion/posture detection Slide 4
