  1. Unit 10-Current IssuesThe Rwandan Genocide By Dakota Francis May 26, 2011 World History period 2

  2. The Rwandan Genocide • On April 6, 1994, thousands were killed in a massive genocide as a result of the tensions between two ethnic groups in Rwanda, the Hutus and the Tutsis

  3. Background Facts • The Hutus were discriminated against by the Tutsis and the Belgians who had control over the country • The Hutus were forced to do labor like construction or plantation work • But it wasn’t the Hutus that were killed by the Tutsis, it was actually the complete opposite, the Hutus were tired of being oppressed so they attacked and killed 800,000 to 1 million Tutsis on April 6, 1994

  4. LOCATION AND MAP OF RWANDA The capital of Rwanda is Kigali, as seen below. Again Rwanda is a small country and is only a bit smaller than Maryland. Rwanda is located in the southern part of Africa and is a relatively small country compared to its neighbors.

  5. My Argument • The Rwandan Genocide was expected but not as large scale as it turned out to be.

  6. Supporting Ideas • Before the genocide, the Hutus were forced to do hard labor by the ruling Belgians, who also saw them as inferior. • Even before the Belgians ruled the land, the Hutus and the Tutsis were always at each others throats. • Rebel organizations were formed by both groups Tutsis: Rwandan Patriotic Front(RPF) Hutus: Committee for the Defense of the Republic(CDR)
