Hydrogen H • Is a non-metal, and is in it’s own family. • It is the lightest Element in the universe, and is also the most abundant. • It’s very reactive, because it has 1 valence electron. • Hydrogen is no longer used in blimps, because pure hydrogen can react with the oxygen and create a huge explosive reaction in the presence of a spark.
LithiumLi Lithium is an Alkali Metal. It is very reactive because it has 1 valence electron. It is a soft silver-white metal. Under standard conditions it is the lightest and least dense solid element.
Calcium Ca • Atomic number: 20 • It is an alkaline earth metal. • There is 2 valence electrons, so it is very reactive, but not as reactive as Alkali metals. • Calcium is the earths fifth most abundant element (by mass) in the earth’s crust. • Your bones need calcium to be strong, and healthy. • It is also the most abundant mineral in the body.
CobaltCo Atomic number: 27 Cobalt is a transition metal (groups 3-12) It is located is group 9 Transition metals are not very reactive, they are actually considered to be the least reactive metals. Cobalt is used in rechargeable batteries. it’s valence electrons can not be predicted by the grouping.
Boron B • Atomic number: 5 • It is in the Boron family. • There are three valence electrons. • It is a non-metal • Boron is in the13th group on the periodic table. • Boron is in borax, which we used in class to make gak! (we made gak in class!!!)
Carbon C • Atomic number:6 • Carbon is in the carbon family, which is in group 14 • Carbon is a non-metal • It is found in nature • the 15th most abundant element is carbon • there are four valence electrons
Phosphorus P • Atomic number: 15 • It is a member of the Nitrogen family, which is in the 15th group • There are 5 valence electrons in Phosphorus • Phosphorus is a non-metal • It usually is seen in rock shape
Oxygen O • Atomic number: 8 • It is in the oxygen family, which is in the 16th group • Oxygen is a non metal • There are 6 valence electrons in oxygen • It is colorless, odorless, and reactive • Oxygen is what we breathe, and surrounds us.
Fluorine F • Atomic number: 9 • Fluorine is a halogen, and is in the 17th group • It has 7 valence electrons. • Halogens are very reactive gases • Fluorine is commonly found in tooth paste, because it helps to prevent tooth decay
Xenon Xe • Atomic number: 54 • Xenon is a noble gas, and is in group 18 • It is a non-metal, and has eight valence electrons, and therefore is non-reactive, because it is ‘happy’ • Often used in types of lamps
HolMium Ho • Atomic number: 67 • Holmium is a lanthanide, and it Valence electrons are not able to be predicted by its grouping. • It is commonly found in alloys
Uranium U • Atomic number: 92 • It is a Actinide • It’s valence electrons can not be determined by its grouping • It is often used in Nuclear fuel
