Internet in the UK • Almost 100 UK domain names per 1,000 population • Approx 5m .com and other registrations too • 5% of the register is from overseas • 50% of households have internet access (80% have broadband) • 53% of people aged 16+ have made online purchases • Of people with access, their main activities are: • Email 90% • Instant messaging 43% • Multimedia content 40% • Internet radio 33% • Growth in online retailing, gambling and social interaction online
.uk use in the UK • 48% of adults would use a personal web page to share information with friends and family • 72% of adults visit a .uk web site first when browsing or shopping online • 66% visit a .uk search engine in preference to any other when looking for information online • 62% of Internet users think that a co.uk web address suggests that a company is more relevant and local Source: YouGov independent survey, September 2006
Background – the .uk model in brief • Private sector registry, not for profit organisation – not able to distribute profits • No formal agreement between UK Government and Nominet, no domain name legislation or sector regulation • No contract with ICANN – exchange of letters • Policy advisory body – representatives from all stakeholders • Dispute resolution service that includes mediation • First come, first served policy • Registrar channel model • Nominet’s scope changed last year to allow us to offer other registry services • Nominet plays an active role in ICANN, ccNSO, IETF etc., etc

Technical excellence • Our primary nameserver is dynamically updated with changes every 30 seconds • We run our own international network of nameservers and also a secondary service to ensure that we have wide resilience. • We have our main datacentre at our office in Oxford • We have a backup datacentre with mirror data & systems in a ex-nuclear bunker 100 miles away • Our internal registry system is built on an Oracle database that runs on a 8-way cluster in our main site and is mirrored in our backup site • We track and participate in the development of numerous technologies within standards groups such as IETF, W3C, ETSI etc
Foundation • Prime purpose - public benefit to UK Internet stakeholders through education, research and the funding of suitable projects. • The Foundation will be a stand-alone charitable company limited by guarantee, set up with an initial donation of £5m from Nominet • The Foundation will be governed by a board of six Trustees with appropriate skills and experience • The Foundation will possibly also be able to assist the development of the Internet in developing countries
