  1. Bell Quiz

  2. 9.1 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials You will review what polynomials are You will learn how to add and subtract polynomials Page 31 in the workbook

  3. Polynomial: • An algebraic expression made up of terms. This polynomial has three terms Terms are separated by plusses (+) and minuses (-)

  4. How many terms are in each polynomial? 2 terms 4 terms

  5. Descending Order • By convention we write our polynomials in descending order; that is, from the highest exponent to the lowest exponent. Rewrite the polynomial in descending order highest lowest

  6. Different kinds of polynomials • What does “poly” mean? • So a polynomial has MANY terms • What number does “mono” represent? • So a monomial has ONE term • What number does “bi” represent? • So a binomial has TWO terms • What number does “tri” represent? • So a trinomial has THREE terms

  7. The DEGREE of a polynomial • The highest number of variables in one term. Has a degree of 2 Has a degree of 3 Has a degree of 3

  8. Tell the type of polynomial and the degree Monomial Degree of 5 Binomial Degree of 1 Trinomial Degree of 4

  9. ADDING polynomials Look for like terms What like terms do you see? –2y 7x

  10. ADDING polynomials Look for like terms Combine the like terms and simplify: –x –16 4x2

  11. ADDING polynomials Look for like terms Combine the like terms and simplify: 3x3 – 6x2 +4x +4

  12. SUBTRACTINGpolynomials Distribute the negative; Then look for like terms

  13. SUBTRACTINGpolynomials Distribute the negative; Then look for like terms

  14. SUBTRACTINGpolynomials Distribute the negative; Then look for like terms

  15. Assignment #17: Pg 557: 4, 7, 8, 9, 17-26 all, 30-35 all, 43-48 all, 54
