Who was Picasso? • Picasso was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, decorative artist and writer. He was born in Málaga, Spain in 1881. • His Full name was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso * • His father was a painter. One of the latest paintings from Picasso recently sold at a New York Auction for $106.5 Million, setting a new record for a work of art. The painting is titled “Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur(Nude, Green Leaves and Bust) It was created in a single day in March 1932. The New York Times Pablo Picasso

Joan Miró(1893-1983) • Born in Barcelona, Spain into the family of a successful goldsmith in 1893 • Started drawing classes at the age of seven • Met Picasso in Paris in 1919 and became friends with him • Developed his own distinctive style using simple lines, and symbolic flat brightly colored shapes

The Tilled Field, (1923–1924) This early painting, a complex arrangement of objects and figures, was Miró's first Surrealist masterpiece.

Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali Born in 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain.
A flamboyant painter and sometimes writer, sculptor and experimental film-maker, Salvador Dali was probably the greatest Surrealist artist of all time, using bizarre dream imagery to create unforgettable and unmistakable landscapes of his inner world. His most famous work is The Persistence Of Memory(see in the next slide)
Surrealism Characteristics • Placing of ordinary objects in unusual settings • Familiar objects have new translations • Dream like state • Integration of one image into another
Final Activity • Inspired by Dali, draw a surreal picture where one object turns into another. For example, a bowl of fruit could also turn into a face as in the painting below by Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
