  2. 2 APPROXIMANT CONSONANT SOUNDS Definition: The approximant are those consonant which are most similar to vowels in their articulation. Approximant articulation involves one articulator approaching another but without the tract becoming narrowed to such an extend that turbulent airflow occur. 12345678910

  3. 3 SEMI VOWEL CONSONANT The w sound, y sound and j sound are called semi-vowel, because although the vowel tract is relatively unrestricted during the formation of both of these sounds, they are not syllabic. Examples: • Crown - Rhythm • Town - History • Where - Try 12345678910

  4. 4 SYLLABIC CONSONANT A syllabic consonant is a consonant sound that becomes the base sound of a syllable. R sound is a syllabic consonant. Examples: • Red • Ring • Rubber 12345678910

  5. 5 PLACE OF ARTICULATION • Bilabial ( w sound ) In bilabial consonant, the lower and upper lips approach or touch each other. The sound w involves two constriction of the vowel tract made simultaneously. One of them is lips rounding. - Palatal ( y and j sound ) In palatal consonant, the body of the tongue approaches or touch the hard palate. 12345678910

  6. 6 - Retroflex ( r sound ) The tongue tip is curled up toward the post alveolar region (the area immediately behind the alveolar ridge). 12345678910

  7. 7 Manner of articulation The w sound is created with the jaw mostly closed and the lips formed in a small, tight circle. The sound is voiced, so the vocal cords must be vibrate during the production of the sound.. How to pronounce the w sound 12345678910

  8. 8 The tongue is extended forward, with the body of the tongue very near the tooth ridge and hard palate. Because the tongue is so high, the jaw is kept relatively closed during the formation of this sound. How to pronoun the y, j sound 12345678910

  9. 9 There are two different ways to create an r sound, and although the tongue placement is quite different between the two, the sound they produce is very similar. An important aspect of the American r sound is that the tip of tongue never touch the tooth ridge during this sound. Method 1 (solid): The back tongue is raaised so the sides of the tongue touch the back teeth. The center of the back of the tongue is lower and the air travels through this groove. Method 2 (dashed): The tip of the tongue is raised and curled back behind the tooth ridge while the back of the tongue stays low. How to pronoun the r sound 12345678910
