Minimum High School Program In order for a student to opt into the minimum high school program, the student must (1) be at least 16 years of age; (2) have completed two credits required for graduation in each subject of the foundation curriculum; or • have failed to be promoted to the tenth grade one or more times as determined by the school district.

  10. Minimum High School Program • A student must meet one of the 3 circumstances. • A student has the right to re-enroll in the RHSP at any time. • A student must satisfy all the course requirements listed in 19 TAC Chapter 74 for a total of 23 credits to graduate.

  12. Early Graduates • Planning is ESSENTIAL • Three year graduates • A formal plan should be in place by the second semester of their sophomore year • Three and a half year graduates • A formal plan should be in place by the second semester of their junior year

THEA/ACCUPLACER • www.thea.nesinc.com Information available in the counseling office • Texas Higher Education Assessment – placement purposes in English and Math only • TJC is the testing site for this test • Seniors should go to TJC’s testing center to take the test if they are not exempt • Exemptions: A student can be exempt from this test based on his TAKS, SAT or ACT scores.

  18. SAT • www.collegeboard.com • WHS is a testing site for the SAT (except for March 13 and June 5) • Cost is $45 for the Reasoning Test • Subject tests are additional Upcoming Dates: 11/7, 12/5, 1/23, 3/13, 5/1, and 6/5

Preparing for the SAT • Familiarize themselves with the different types of questions on the SAT, the Challenge themselves throughout high school by taking rigorous courses • Read and write as much as possible – both in and out of school • Familiarize themselves with the SAT so they know what to expect on test day • directions for each type of question, and how the test is scored.

  24. INGREDIENTS FOR SUCCESS • Attendance • Need to be at school to get instruction • Absences tend to create gaps in learning • 90% Rule impacts credits and the issuance of VOE forms for drivers education

Type-written is best

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS • Most (but not all) opportunities are only available for current seniors • College/university office is primary contact for merit-based award • Senior Newsletters – Apply for everything possible • Don’t miss a deadline – Keep a checklist • Local scholarship information available in the Spring • Sophomore of the Year & HOBY Award

FINANCIAL AID • Every family should apply • Apply for student AND parent PIN for the FAFSA now at www.pin.ed.gov • (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov • Cost of school – Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) = Financial Aid • Use search engines: www.finaid.org • www.fastweb.com • We will host a financial aid workshop for parents on Monday February 1, 2010 at 6:30 pm
