Our Goals • To provide a supportive and fun environment where each student’s individual needs are met • To help students make new friends and discover new interests • To give students the academic and social skills needed to progress to fourth grade
Class Rules 1) Make Responsible Choices 2)Follow Directions 3) Think First 4) Do Your Best 5) Treat Others Kindly and Politely
Behavior Plan • Money System: $10/per week • Dollars given for behavior or work habits above or beyond • Dollars taken for poor behavior, no homework, reading log or agenda not returned/signed • Money tied to Bi-Weekly “Fun Friday”
“Punches” • Students are encouraged to work cooperatively together and are rewarded through a punch card for positive behaviors • We also have “blue tickets” which can be earned for a weekly drawing of items in the Treat Box
Attendance/Tardiness • School starts at 7:50 A.M. • If students aren’t in the classroom by the time the second bell rings, please have them check in at the school office before coming to class. • If a student is absent or tardy five times, I will be sending you a note. • When absent or tardy 10 times, the school office will contact you.
Reading Genres Shift from “Learning to Read” to “Reading to Learn” • Narrative Text • Informational Text • Fiction Text • Poetry
Spelling Standard: …uses common rules of spelling (in writing) • Spelling-2-3 days/week • Menu of choices with sort of words will be sent home-complete 3 • Dictation test using approx. 10 words will be given-see agenda for date
Reading Skills • Comprehension : main idea, inference, use of context clues, drawing conclusions, sequence of events • Fluency : 120 wpm by end of grade 3 • Vocabulary • Guided Reading Level: goal of Level P by end of third grade
Reading Program Components • Guided Reading • “Literacy Centers” – Structured Activities to reinforce standards learned • Literature Circles • Author Studies • Lexile Levels – read 20 minutes daily in book of appropriate Lexile • **Students must pass the CRCT Reading Test to be promoted to Grade 4.
Writing • 6 +1 Traits of Writing • Writer’s Workshop • Writing Journals • Grammar • Writing effective paragraphs • Cursive handwriting – much will need to be practiced at home.
State Writing Assessment • 4 Genres • County Rubrics are used to assess • Response to Literature • Narrative • Persuasive • Informational • Completed throughout the school year • Final scores submitted to state by the end of March.
Math • Place Value to Ten Thousand • Addition/Subtraction Facts!!!! (First 2 months) • Multiplication Facts • Division • Elapsed Time • Counting back change
Math, con’t • Problem Solving • Measurement: length, area, perimeter • Fractions and decimals
Science • Rocks and Minerals • Fossils • Soil • Magnets • Heat • Georgia Habitats and Organisms
Social Studies • Roots of Our Democracy – Ancient Greece, Ancient Olympics • Our Economy • Locating important rivers and mountain ranges in the US • Famous American Heroes – Having an impact on our democracy
Social Studies Famous Americans(All deal with Civil Rights) • Paul Revere, Fredrick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson, & Cesar Chavez
Homework • Homework should take no more than 30 minutes every night. • 20 minutes of reading in a book of an appropriate level • Monthly WEBproject (Wonderfully Exciting Books!)
Testing Information • Third grade has a variety of tests we participate in: • CRCT – April 2012. Students will be tested in Reading, Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. • Students must pass the reading portion to be promoted to grade 4. • CogAt-Oct. 5-7 • ITBS-Oct 10-17 • State Writing Assessment- Spring
How Can Parents Help? • Please check Agenda each day. • Correct any work in Tuesday Folder • Sign or initial to show homework has been completed. • Use Agenda to write any necessary notes. It will be checked each morning. (e.g.: Transportation changes, misc. information)
