Kinectivity • Today’s home is a collection of heterogeneous devices • Different control mechanisms for various devices • We have come up with a unified interface for controlling various home devices by intuitive human gestures • We have utilized the power of Kinect to recognize gestures to develop this interface • Kinectivity can be deployed in any smart home to provide home automation and control • Kinectivity has the following major components: • Kinect • Home Server • Plug Computer • Z-wave switches • Kinectivity Architecture • We could foresee the following significant use cases: • Home Automation and Control • Controlling media devices in a smart home • Controlling sensory devices like lights, blinds, doors, etc • Controlling air conditioners to adjust temperatures • Home Security • Generating alerts during emergency conditions • Health Issues • Track human movements to find number of burnt calories during workout • Help handicapped persons to control devices • Key Benefits of Kinectivity: • Unified interface for several home devices • User configurable settings for each device • Cost effective solution • The following technologies have been used in Kinectivity • FAAST: Firmware for communicating with the Kinect • Z-wave: Protocol for communication between devices • OSGi: A framework for developing programs/bundles in Java to interact with home devices Why Kinectivity?
