History • The schools “Green flag assignment” in all three schoolhouses became the spark of interest in the process of learning more about the local region. • The school received a grant in the autumn of 2009 to work in such a curriculum education that was given the name “Local region education". • Experimental curriculum was released in January 2010. • During the 2010 - 2011 school year was the first one where the school worked according to the curriculum that is reviewed and updated each autumn.

What do we learn in local region education? • Local region education focuses on Snæfellsbærin a comprehensive manner. • Nature of land and sea. • Topography and geography. • The history of the community and the related stories. • Place names in the community. • Modern community infrastructure and social structure. • Future of the region.

  4. How do we learn local region education? • The subject is to focus with great emphasis on the learning experience where students need to acquire information. • Both by accumulating written information that can be at school and also going out of the school buildings and into the community to provide source data. • The curriculum is structured in such a way that each agegroupreceives certain tasks to work on.

Curriculum • North of Fróðárheiði. • 1 – 4th grade(Hellissandur) • Projects related to the area outside Enni and to Vegamót around the glacier. • 5 - 10th grade (Ólafsvík) • Project east of Enni to Búlandshöfði and more focus on community Snæfellsbær. • South of Fróðárheiði. • Curriculum based on the "three-year cycles" to cater for multigrade agegroups.

Among assignments • Berry picking and jam making subsequently. • Cleaning and tidying in the beach - Krossavík. • Visits to museums in Snæfellsbær. • Visits to companies in Snæfellsbær. • Project on flora and fauna of Snæfellsbær. • Projects related to wildlife in Breiðafjörður. • Education on including churches, lighthouses , community centers, farms of old, hand old roads, airports, recognizable individuals etc. • Final project for the graduates to be a permanent presentation on their work.

The future... • Local region education lives its own life evolving as the society it gathers info and education from. • The curriculum is revised every year with the goal of that learning is dynamic and interactive, with endless possibilities on another view of the tasks and challenges. • The development of Local region education in recent years has led to breaking up of traditional teaching that extends beyond the subject.

  8. The future • The introduction of the new National Curriculum currently underway is largely based on the methods that were practiced in the introduction of the curriculum in local region education. • Thereby, the local region education is a lighthouse, spreading it’s light and guiding the school toward future work. • In all surveys organized by the school has there has been much pleasure with local region education. • It did not matter whether discussed with staff, students or guardians.
