Surrealist Photography • The Surrealist Photography movement in Paris included photographers such as Jacques-André Boiffard, Brassaï, Ilse Bing, André Kertész, Germaine Krull, Dora Maar, and Man Ray • They used fragmentation, montage, unusual viewpoints, and various technical manipulations (including solarisation, double exposure and combination printing)
Philippe Halsmam • Halsman was famous for his portraiture of celebrities and politicians which appeared on magazine covers • In the early 1940s Halsman met Salvador Dali and started working with him producing surrealist photography
Philippe Halsmam • The 1948 work Dali Atomicus explores the idea of suspension, depicting three cats flying, a bucket of thrown water, and Salvador Dalí in mid air. The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí’s work Leda Atomica which can be seen in the right of the photograph behind the two cats. Halsman reported that it took 28 attempts to be satisfied with the result. http://morfis.wordpress.com/2011/01/04/making-surreal-photography-before-photoshop/
