Can Physical Activity and Sport really deliver on wider student outcomes? Donna Thompson Sport Partnerships Manager
Who are we? One new voice for College Sport
How is sport and physical activity perceived in your college? • Like electricity? It makes everything work… • Or a luxury we can’t afford?
How can sport and physical activity programmes support positive student outcomes?
How about? • Increasing recruitment • Increasing achievement • Improving attendance and retention • Developing employability skills • Improving health
And… …providing evidence of all of these for Ofsted…
Recruitment One in five respondents said that the sporting opportunities offered by a college were influential in their decision to apply. Sport England student survey 2013
Achievement Over one-quarter (28.8%) of College students who took part in sport agreed that ‘taking part in sport helps them with their College work’. A further 8.4 per cent strongly agreed with this statement. Sport England student survey 2013
Attendance and retention 68% of students who are involved in Newham SFC’s sports teams have attendance or 90% of more, compared with a College average of 57%. • At Totton College attendance was 3.78% higher in 2011/12 and 3% in 2012/13 for Sport Academy students than non-sport, FT learners.
Employability Colleges train over 85,000 learners each year in industry-related sport qualifications.
