  1. AIAA/AHS Joint Technical Specialist Meeting Thursday, 20 May 2010 Boeing Bldg 100 Cafeteria American Helicopter Society – International Midwest Section American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics St. Louis Section Gorilla Development – and Procurement The Story behind Army Aviation Adaption of “Modern” Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) Technology to Support its Fleet Presented by: Dr. Samuel T. Crews Chief Engineer of Aeromechanics Division, Aviation & Missile Research, Development & Engineering Center U.S. Army Research, Development & Engineering Command Redstone Arsenal, AL Condition based maintenance (CBM) is maintenance when need arises and not schedule driven. This maintenance is performed after some of indicators show equipment is going to fail or that equipment performance is deteriorating. CBM is based on using real-time data to prioritize and optimize maintenance resources. Developments in recent years have allowed extensive instrumentation of equipment, and together with better tools for analyzing condition data, the maintenance personnel of today are more than ever able to decide what is the right time to perform maintenance on some piece of equipment. CBM minimizes spare parts cost, system downtime and time spent on maintenance. Dr. Crews received his Doctorate degree from Washington University - St. Louis, where he was a student of helicopter rotor and windmill expert – Dr. Kurt Hohenesmer. He went to work for Army Aviation in 1977 working at the St. Louis D&Q Directorate. Dr. Crews has been involved with the development, qualification and fielding of most of the current Army helicopters. From 1999, he has been the Chief Engineer of the Aeromechanics Division. Dr. Crews is a newly inaugurated American Helicopter Society Technical Fellow.
