Illinois EarthScope is a 3 year Math-Science-Technology teacher workshop project to introduce EarthScope to teachers in Illinois before the USArray rolls into the state in 2011. • Illinois EarthScope is funded by the Illinois State Board of Education using stimulus money from the U.S. Department of Education • I8 Teachers from across Illinois Teaching grades 3 – 1210 days (July 27 – August 7 2009)
Illinois EarthScope Timeline • 2005 - Work with U.S.G.S to site Backbone Seismic Station HDIL • 2006 – Construction of Station HDIL and continuous monitor GPS station as part of the Plate Boundary Observatory • - Initial idea for a teacher workshop • 2008 – New personnel at Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois State University Center for Math, Science and Technology
Illinois EarthScope Timeline2009 • February – Aware of stimulus money to state boards of education • Initial email and phone conversations about a new RFP to include workshops • Develop workshop concept • April 29 RFP issued with May 29 proposal deadline • To conduct a workshop in 2010 must do one in 2009 consisting of 10 days in the Summer and 4 days in following academic year • Must conduct a needs assessment
Illinois EarthScope Timeline2009 • Annual 3 day Workshop for 25-30 teachers • Permission to contact -2009 teachers via email to conduct needs assessment • May 13 - Sent out needs assessment to 47 teachers
Illinois EarthScope Timeline2009 • May 27 – Proposal sent to Illinois State Board of Education • June 15 – Email that Illinois EarthScope will be funded June 1, 2009 – September 30, 2011 • First cycle funds must be expended by September 30, 2009 • July 27 – August 7 conduct 10 day workshop • August 11 Illinois State University receives official grant award
