Overview • ASPL-v1: a prototype of an advanced semantic platform for learning • Design principles & architecture • Learning scenario analysis • Demonstration of learning scenario • Further extensions and collaborations • Effort breakdown KnowledgeWeb EU Review, Karlsruhe, 14/15 March 2005
Key results: ASPL-v1 • Basic resources & infrastructures in place • VISWER learning units, Magpie plug-in with semantic services, and additional data sources • Building ontology for Semantic Web Studies: • Conceptual resources for understanding the domain • Social resources embedding the concepts in a living community (incl. CiteSeer, KWeb portal, AKT KB,…) • Learning resources (VISWER but open to others – JeromeDL/DERI?) • ‘Proof of concept’ services in place demo KnowledgeWeb EU Review, Karlsruhe, 14/15 March 2005
ASPL Development Strategy • Multi-tier, distributed ontologies & KBs • Delegation & composition vs. data aggregation • Extendable & open service-driven architecture • ASPL services are mapped to learning (sub-)tasks • Choice of interaction for the user • Reach out from a centralized VISWER repository • Reach into distributed repositories from ‘anywhere’ • Future(?): subscribe, ask in NL, explore, get advice… • Now predominantly document-centred • Linking (learning) documents with (learning) communities KnowledgeWeb EU Review, Karlsruhe, 14/15 March 2005

Sequence of Use Scenarios • Induction of a ‘naïve’ learner into domain • Awareness of core domain concepts in arbitrary documents • Acquisition of an explanation of term “RDF” • Retrieval of a study material from VISWER repository • Support for a ‘research’ student doing Literature Review • Learner browses a technical specification of the “RDF” standard • All activities as for naïve learners… plus advanced services: • Who is publishing on the theme involving or close to “RDF” • Find communities of researchers similar to (referring to) author X • Scenario for teachers (near future) • Another user group targeted by ASPL – teachers • When preparing a lecture on semantic annotation, the teacher wants to include resources relevant to “RDF”… • …from VISWER, but also other digital libraries, journals, etc. KnowledgeWeb EU Review, Karlsruhe, 14/15 March 2005

Outlook • ASPL extensions/improvements: • Initial demo version well ahead of schedule (due M18) • Focusing on development of domain and social networking ontologies • Start implementing advanced learning services • Interaction with REWERSE NoE • Standardizing ontology/KB for Semantic Web Studies • Re-using each other’s learning materials • Towards more advanced learning services • Support for analytic tasks & automated sense-making KnowledgeWeb EU Review, Karlsruhe, 14/15 March 2005
