2 Truths, 1 Lie • AIMSweb contains over 33 different assessment areas. • AIMSweb is designed to provide instruction to meet students’ needs. • AIMSweb is a subscription-based, online data management system.
The AIMSweb Journey in UA… • IS at Jones needed data to help better understand how to place students – both in groups for reading instruction as well as the placement of the reading course vs. global language • Jones teachers worked together to pilot AIMSweb benchmarking. • They coupled benchmarking results with focused instruction and saw improved student achievement. • Jones worked with Hastings teachers to show them how this tool was beneficial and they began using it. • Today, students in grades 6-8 are given 2 benchmark assessments 3 times per year – used to group students for language arts instruction as well as placement in courses. • Students in 5th grade (for the past year or two – depending on the school) have been benchmarked to help with placement of incoming 6th graders.
What is AIMSweb? • Subscription-based, online system • Resource for benchmarking and progress monitoring materials • Data management system • Report generator • Standardized
AIMSweb also IS… • One piece of the data “picture” • A conversation starter • A picture of present levels of performance • A quantitative measure of performance
AIMSweb is NOT… • Instruction • An assessment tool used in isolation of other assessment strategies or instruments • A “one-time” assessment • An anecdotal, qualitative measure
MAZE (comprehension) • Administer 1 grade level passage • First sentence in every passage is intact • Approximately every 7th word is replaced with three bold-faced words • 2 distracters = visually similar, grammatically/syntactically similar • 1 correct choice • 3 minute timed passage • Can be given whole group, small group, or individually
ORF (Oral Reading Fluency or R-CBM) • Administer 3 grade level passages • 1 minute each • Teacher needs a timer • Individualized • administer to one student at a time
AIMSweb Benchmarking Windows • September 1- September 30 • Reporting date: October 8 • January 3-31 • Reporting date: February 7 • May 2-31 • Reporting date: June 7
Purpose of AIMSweb 5th Grade Pilot • Administration and scoring protocols for the MAZE and Oral Reading Fluency assessments • Training videos • Go to www.aimsweb.com • Support and Training • Training • Training Materials • Reading CBM – Video Examples
AIMSweb Benchmarking Parameters5th Grade Pilot • September 1- September 30 (PRACTICE WINDOW) • MAZE – a few students or whole group • ORF – a few students • Report no scores • January 3-31 • MAZE – all students • ORF – only those below MAZE benchmark • Report scores on spreadsheet • May 2-31 • MAZE – all students • ORF – only those below MAZE benchmark • Report scores on spreadsheet • Turn in scores to Julie’s dropbox
5th Grade AIMSweb Benchmarks MAZE - # of correct responses ORF - # of words read correctly • September 1- September 30 • MAZE – 17 • ORF – 117 • January 3-31 • MAZE – 21 • ORF – 134 • May 2-31 • MAZE – 25 • ORF – 149
Looking ahead… • Sharing data with elementary principals/EIS and middle schools • Excel spreadsheets • After January administration and/or May • Plan for evaluating AIMSweb as an assessment tool at the 5th grade level • Meeting via wiki • In person meeting after school • Exploration of AIMSweb as a progress monitoring tool
