TIPP Overview – Policies and Procedures SBES One-to-One Technology Immersion Program: Tablet General Overview and Instructions Introduction Learning is the focus of the Illinois and SBES Technology Immersion Pilot Program (TIPP). The tablet PC’s support change from lecture-based/instructor-centered classrooms to learning-based/student-centered classrooms. Tablet PC’s facilitate the change/shift through the use of the “anytime/anywhere” capabilities of wireless environments. There are two major goals for this program. The first, as always, is to improve student learning. The second is to develop an effective model for web-based instructional strategies. Shifting classroom practices to a web-based model will enable students to develop skills required to be self-directed, independent, life­long learners which will help them compete in the global arena for college placement and employment opportunities.

9. Ownership of Machines The laptops are the property of St. Benedict Elementary School (SBES) in conjunction with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and are being provided for the exclusive use of SBES students and their teachers. Due to insurance and liability issues, the Gateway Tablet PC’s should not be lent to other individuals, groups, or institutions.

11. Insurance Parents should check their homeowners/renters insurance policy to determine if it covers the tablet computer, valued at $1,559, for loss, theft, or damage. If your insurance does not cover the tablet you will be held financially responsible for any loss or damage to the unit.

ADP (Accidental Damage Protection) Not covered under Gateway Accidental Damage Service Plan: • · Product failures caused by natural disasters • · Loss or damage caused by fire, theft, disappearance, misplacement or computer viruses • · Product damage caused by reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct • · Normal wear or cosmetic change and other damages that does not affect functionality

15. Privacy SBES retains control, custody and supervision of all computers, networks and Internet services owned or leased by the SBES. SBES reserves the right to monitor all activity by students and staff. Students and staff should have no expectation of privacy in their use of school computers including e-mail, stored files or Internet sites visited.

17. Power Management • Batteries must be fully charged at the beginning of each school day. Charge your computer every night. The Tablets charges faster when “off”. • Whenever the Tablet is not in use, put it to sleep by closing the lid. • Use a simple, light-color desktop image at school. Pick one of the preset images. Save deeper colors and large picture files for home and weekends. • Keep the Tablet in moderate temperatures. Temperature extremes will diminish battery capacity and can damage the computer. Never leave your Tablet in a car.

18. Caring for Your Gateway Tablet • Enjoy your tablet and remember it is delicate, electronic equipment and needs to be treated with care. • Turning the screen • Use the Tablet on a flat, hard stable surface. • Avoid carrying the computer with the lid up…an accident is more likely to happen. • Close the lid from the center of the screen. Don’t slam it shut.

19. Caring for Your Gateway Tablet • Do not set books on top of the Tablet. • Be careful not to leave pencils, pens, or papers on the keyboard when closing the Tablet. • Don’t pick the Tablet up by the monitor • Keep your computer in its case whenever it’s not in use. • Be patient! Sometimes computers need a few seconds to think so don’t start pounding on the keys if response is not immediate.

20. Cleaning • Don’t eat or drink when using the computer. • If using the Tablet outside, avoid sand and dirt. • Wipe surfaces lightly with a clean, soft cloth made for computer screens. Do not use a cleaner to wipe the monitor surface. • Avoid touching the screen with your fingers, pens, and pencils. If you need to clean, clean carefully.

21. General Usage Rules • Keep your password secret. • You are responsible for keeping your Tablet safe, secure, and undamaged. Take good care of it. Keep your Tablet in its case when not used in class. • Bring your tablet to class charged and ready to go. • Use your tablet appropriately - No games, music, videos, or other software on your tablet– unless it’s for a class assignment. Visit only appropriate sites. Send only appropriate email. Notify teachers of any problems or concerns.

22. General Usage Rules • Keep your tablet in a locked, secure place when it’s not with you. • Understand that the tablet belongs to the school, and it can be checked at any time or taken away for disciplinary reasons. • The primary purpose of the tablet is for education. Treat it as a valuable tool for learning.

24. Section A: Using the Tablet at School • 1. Each computer is assigned to an individual student. Students should never “swap” or “share” their computer with another student. • 2. Students required to leave their tablet in their homeroom classroom when not in use. • 3. Students may never share their password with another student.

25. Section A: Using the Tablet at School • 4. Students are responsible for bringing their tablet, fully charged, to school each day. If a student fails to bring their fully charged tablet to school each day, they will no longer be allowed to take it home. • 5. Students who do not have permission to take their tablet home may pick up their tablet in their homeroom classroom each morning, and are required to return their laptop to their homeroom classroom at the end of each day. Students are responsible for making sure their tablet is plugged in for recharging each night. • 6. Computers will be checked each day during homeroom period

26. Section A: Using the Tablet at School • 7. Students will be allowed to recharge their tablets each day during their lunch period. • 8. Students are not allowed to take their computer into the cafeteria. • 9. Students are responsible for saving or backing up their documents to the server or to another source.

28. Section B: Using the Tablet at Home • 1. Students must have the written permission of their parent or guardian before they will be allowed to take their computer home. • 2. Parents/guardians will be given the child’s login name and password, so that they can supervise the student’s use of the computer at home. • 3. When at home, the computer should always be used under adult supervision in a common family location. • 4. Only the authorized student and his/her parents or guardians should use the tablet.

29. Section C: SBES Tablet Policies and Procedures • 1. If the Tablet is lost or stolen, parents/guardians should immediately report the loss or theft to the local police, teacher and SBES administration. A police report will facilitate insurance and other administrative processes.

If the Tablet is damaged or not working properly, it must be turned in to our technology staff for repair or replacement. • Parents/guardians are not authorized to attempt repairs themselves, or contract with any other individual or business for the repair of the Tablet. • Additionally, upgradesto the device are only to be performed by SBES technology staff. Assistance is available if the student wishes to purchase additional hardware for use with the laptop.

31. Section D: Using the Computer for Internet and Email • 1. Students and parents/guardians understand that SBES does not have control over information found on the Internet. While every attempt is make to block access from inappropriate material while the student is at school, the school is not able to monitor student usage of the computer while at home. • It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to supervise the information that a student is accessing from the Internet while at home.

32. Section D: Using the Computer for Internet and Email • Students should never share personal information about themselves or others while using the Internet or email. This includes a student’s name, age, address, phone number or school name.

Section D: Using the Computer for Internet and Email • Students should be aware that Internet access and email, and other media that are accessed, created or stored on their computers are the sole property of SBES. The School has the right to review these items for appropriateness, and to limit or revoke a student’s access to them at any time, and for any reason.

34. Section E: General Use and Care of the ComputerInternet and Email • Families are financially responsible for permanently damaged tablets.

35. Section E: General Use and Care of the ComputerInternet and Email • When transporting their Tablet to and from school, students should always be sure it is placed in the carrying case, and the case is fully closed. Tablet bags can then be placed inside the student’s book bag or backpack.

The computer and case are the property of SBES and CPS, and should be kept clean and free of marks at all times. Placing stickers, writing or drawing on, engraving or otherwise defacing the laptop or carrying case are not allowed and will result in loss of privileges

37. Section E: General Use and Care of the ComputerInternet and Email • 4. Students are to close the cover of their Tablet before carrying it from one location to another. • 5. Students are encouraged to help each other in learning to operate their computer. However, such help should be provided with voices and not hands. Students should operate their own computer at all times.

38. Section E: General Use and Care of the ComputerInternet and Email • 6. Any inappropriate or careless use of a computer should be reported to a teacher or other staff member immediately. • 7. Students should not use their laptop while walking, on the bus, or otherwise being transported.

This includes books, musical instruments, sports equipment, etc. • 11. Students should not use the tablet as a folder to store papers • 12. Computers should never be placed in their carrying case while they are turned on.

41. Section F: Consequences of Inappropriate Use • The use of any school technology is a privilege and not a right. • Students are expected to use their computer in accordance with these Policies and Procedures, and the SBES Acceptable Use Policy and any applicable laws.

Section F: Consequences of Inappropriate Use • Disciplinary action such as detention. • Suspension or Cancellation of student use or access privileges, including the privilege of taking the computer home. • Suspension from school. • Expulsion from school. • Civil or criminal liability under applicable laws.
