Plants What happens if a house plant does not get light? Why do plants need light? How do autotrophs get their food? Why are autotrophs called “producers?”
Photosynthesis definition The Process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food . From greek words “photo” means “light” And “synthesis” which means “putting together.”
Common misconception Some think that Soil provides plants with food, this is incorrect. SOIL only provides some raw materials for the processes that plant performs. FOOD only comes from the sun, water, and carbon dioxide. NOT SOIL. Plants can be grown in only water if nutrients are added to the water = hydroponics.
2 stages of Photosynthesis Capturing the sun’s energy Using energy to make food.
PhotosynthesisStage one: Capturing Sunlight Occurs mostly in the leaves. chloroplasts contain green PIGMENTS called CHLOROPHYLL. (Green pigment)
Pigments Colored chemical compounds that absorb light.
PhotosynthesisSTAGE 2: Making Food Plants use captured energy to produce sugars. Plants need two raw materials: water and carbon dioxide. Water from roots Carbon dioxide from air.
CO2 INTAKE: STOMATA Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is taken in through the STOMATA. STOMATA: small openings in the undersides of leaves used for gas exchange. CO2 enters….O2 exits after photosynthesis is complete.
Special presentation next: because we all learn differently! Sorry!
