Learn about the evolution of brain functions, including conditioning, homeostasis, problem-solving, breathing, fight-or-flight, and visual perception. Understand the link between brain and behavior, discuss the impacts of brain damage, and explore gross brain anatomy and the localization of cortical function.

Put these functions in the order in which you think they evolved • Conditioning • Homeostasis • Problem solving • Breathing • Fight or flight • Visual perception
Today you will… Learn about Learn how to Describe neuroanatomy Explain the link between brain and behaviour Discuss the impacts of brain damage • Gross brain anatomy • Localisation of cortical function
Visual perception Problem solving Front Fight/flight Homeostasis Conditioning What do you notice about the location of these functions in relation to their evolutionary history? Breathing
Evolution of the brain • Brainstem • Basic life functions (eg breathing, heart) • Cerebellum • Basic motor control, balance and some simple learning • Cerebrum • Higher functions (emotion, complex perception, thinking)
Visual perception Problem solving Fight/flight Homeostasis Conditioning Breathing
Cerebrum Cerebellum Brainstem
Localisation of cortical function • Brain function is localised. Different brain areas control different functions. • In general, brain function is cross-lateralised. The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. • Some functions are lateralised. They are concentrated on one side of the brain.

What do you think is the best way of learning this material?
Homework • Find research studies which: • Investigate the role of the cerebellum • Investigate differences between Broca’s & Wernicke’s areas of the brain in the processing of language • For each study, make a clear set of your own notes outlining aim, method, results, conclusions.
Homework • Make sure you have a clear set of notes matching specific brain regions with functions • Learn them
