UNC – Chapel Hill • “Yield to Heels” project and website. Includes brochures and annual awareness day.
What is happening here? • Contacted Transportation Conducting studies and adding signage. New buses have “Watch for pedestrians!” • Contacted Public Safety Nothing currently happening. Not in favor of regulating pedestrians. • Contacted New Student Orientation Nothing currently exists.
Purpose • To ensure the safety of the campus community and to improve the orderly flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Main FocusNarrowing the scope • Dan Allen Drive from Faucette Street to Founders • According to David Gregory in Transportation: “Dan Allen Drive is the biggest concern on campus with regard to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.” • 2004: 3 pedestrian vs vehicle accidents. • 2005: 3 bicycle vs vehicle accidents, and 1 bicycle vs bicycle accident • 2006: 1 moped vs sign accident, 1 pedestrian vs vehicle, and 1 hit and run against a pedestrian • 2007 (through May 1st): 1 bicycle vs vehicle, and 1 skateboard vs vehicle • Focus broken down to 3 specific areas of Dan Allen
No crosswalk where there are curb cuts – at the Hodges intersection toward the emergency Blue Light. Crosswalks not clearly defined at Sullivan intersection. Current Situation – Focus Area 1
Crosswalk at Bragaw Hall is not clearly marked with road paint. Jaywalking and heavy traffic congestion at Cates intersection. Current Situation – Focus Area 2
Raised crosswalk by the parking deck is not clearly marked with signs or road paint. Pedestrians do not utilize crosswalks at Thurman or Yarbrough. Current Situation – Focus Area 3
Add painted crosswalks and road signs at the curb cuts already in place. Proposed Solutions – Focus Area 1
Add visibility to existing crosswalks with signs and paint. Enforce usage of crosswalks with police issued warning and tickets. Evaluate Cates Avenue intersection. Proposed Solutions – Focus Area 2
Add signs to Dan Allen deck crosswalk at Yarbrough intersection. Investigate adding another crosswalk on south side of Yarbrough intersection. Proposed Solutions – Focus Area 3

Introduce our WolfWalks Icon and paint it on all raised crosswalks on Dan Allen Drive and eventually across campus. Making it a identifying brand to bring safety into mind for both pedestrians and drivers.
Our request: Please consider taking our recommendations to committee and take actions to move in the direction of implementing a pedestrian safety awareness initiative at NCSU. Thank you for your consideration.
