Geography • Was located in northwestern Nigeria and Western Sudan. • Two capitals: Kukiya and Gao • Base of power was on the bend of the Niger River.
Law and Government/Rulers • Sonni Ali established a government under the royal court which appointed governors and mayors. • Askia Muhammad increased centralization. • He encouraged learning in Timbuktu since it was the “educational capital.” -Sonni Ali
Economy • The economy was based on trade. • Their main exports were gold, Kola nuts, and slaves. • Textiles, horses, salt and luxury goods were the main imports.
Religion • Upper classes converted into Islam while lower classes continued to follow traditional religions. • Based on a mixture of Islam and their traditions. • They practice Ramadan and try their best to make the Hajj.
Achievements • The control of trade was the key to the success of the Songhai empire. • Timbuktu was a thriving cultural, educational and commercial center.
What forces led to the rise of Songhai? • The geographic region was superior for trade. • They had strong leaders like Sonni Ali and Askia Muhammad. • Sonni Ali was a great military leader.
