Began when Songhai king conquered a weak Mali Empire and expanded territory. • Social/Culture: • Use Niger River for transport, fishing, hunting, agriculture and trade, particularly gold. • In 1009, king of Songhai converted to Islam and moved to Goa which attracted Muslim merchants and scholars, causing it to become a very important settlement and commercial center.
