Scientists have developed a language of symbols to stand for the elements. Atomic Symbol:a notation of one or two letters that represent an element. First letter is ALWAYS a capital letter Second letter (if used) is ALWAYS a lower-case letter Newer synthetic elements with temporary names may have 3 letters in their symbols

Atoms…How do they differ? • ATOMIC NUMBER: the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. • Since atoms are neutral, they have an equal number of protons and electrons. • THEREFORE…the atomic number also equals the number of electrons the atom has. A.P.E. Atomic # = Proton # = Electron #
Atoms…How do they differ? • MASS NUMBER: total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. • The mass number does NOT include electrons. • How do you calculate the number of neutrons in an atom? • Mass Number – Atomic Number = # of Neutrons. M.A.N. Atomic Mass – Atomic # = Neutron #
Add this definition to your notes! • isotope atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. • Isotopes have the same atomic number, but they have different mass numbers.
Directions: Using the Periodic Table of the Elements, complete the chart below.
6 ATOMIC NUMBER C Symbol 12.011 ATOMIC MASS • The Atomic Number is the number of protons • The Atomic mass is the number of protons plus neutrons • Atomic mass (rounded to the nearest whole number) minus atomic number equals number of neutrons. • Number of protons is equal to the number of electrons.
Steps to drawing the Bohr model Determine the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons. (A.P.E. M.A.N.) Draw nucleus. Fill in electrons starting from the inner energy level. 1st Level: 2 electrons 2nd Level: 8 electrons 3rd Level: 8 electrons
