Ancient Mesopotamia The ancient civilization has been inhabited since the dawn of man .The meaning of Mesopotamia is the land between two rivers ,it comes from Greek. About 3500 BC an ancient Semitic group of people called the Sumerians inhabited the land of ancient Mesopotamia. The Sumerians were the first Mesopotamia civilization.
The main features of Ancient Mesopotamia • is: • Creates rules or laws for the Mesopotamia people. • Builds cities and ground structures . • Has religious beliefs and practise. • A system of writing. • Food. • Water from the two rivers.
water/from the two rivers The water from the two river is very important to the Sumerians because without it they couldn’t grow crops because they need water without crops is like no food example, bread, flower, all fruits all vegetables nearly every food they ate in ancient Mesopotamia. The two river are Euphrates river and Tigris river as you can see on the map on slide 5.
food The Sumerians ate what the could find. For example ,apples, pears, grapes, figs, quinces ,plums, apricots, mulberries, melons, and pomegranates. They eat lots of bread for nearly every meal. They drank beer, cows milk ,fish which provided protein and water of course, They ate heaps of food they grew themselves like Barley , chickpeas , lentils ,dates , wheat ,onions ,garlic ,lettuce ,leeks and mustard.
Mesopotamia Sumerians system of writing. The Sumerians wrote poetically, describing events as the work of their gods. The Mesopotamia writing was called cuneiform .The Sumerians wrote by pressing pictures into the wet clay with a pen made out of reed , and dried the clay to form tablets. Instead of developing their writing all at once, as one might expect with divine revelation, they created it across centuries. They draw the pictures into symbols called ideograms. .
Religious Beliefs Anu , the ruler of the gods The Sumerians did not have a direct religion, but like the Egyptians had many Gods and Godesses. Each Sumerian city had its own God. The Sumerians believed that the forces of nature(rain, wind floods) were alive. The people couldn't control the forces of nature so they worship them as Gods, the Sumerians believed that the only reason why they were living on earth is to please the Gods. Enki The god of the earth
Enlil The most powerful God is Enlil. He is the God of air. Who separated heaven and earth. Enlil also gave the Sumerian's their knowledge of farming.

Ziggurats The ziggurats are temples with massive stepped pyramids about 210 by 150 feet .The earliest temples in southern Mesopotamia consisted of small one room structures. The ziggurats one of the new major features was a tower like structure erected adjacent to a normal temple building.
Houses of the Sumerians The earliest Sumerians house were built of bundles of reeds but after cities began to develop sun baked mud brick they were used. The average house was a small one story. The houses in the cites were very close together with most sharing a Wall with their neighbour. They aren't very ventilated and didn’t have any windows. The averages room size of the most home in Sumerians were 10 feet by 12 feet.
Laws was an integral part of the Sumerians society, all aspect of civil life was recorded and written on a tablet. The Sumerians are responsible for the first know set of written laws, these Laws are know as the code of ur-nammu. By the 2400 B.C laws were common on Sumerians society. There laws were design to protect the weak, poor, widows and orphans from the rich . Rules or Laws for the Sumerians People
