Program Overview The 3Rs Program was successfully launched in 2006 by the Cleveland Bar Association and has been positively received by the students, teachers, and volunteers. It has been adopted by the GRBA Managing Partners Diversity Collaborative as one of several pipeline development activities. It is intended to place every freshman student in frequent contact with a member of the legal profession and administered in partnership with the Grand Rapids Public Schools.
3Rs Program Goals • Improve understanding of and respect for the rule of law and our Constitution; • Increase interest in civic and governmental issues; • Provide practical career counseling to focus students on their potential beyond high school; and • Improve the “pipeline” of minorities flowing into legal careers in the region.

How it works:Teams and team organization • For the 2014-15 school year, we are recruiting over 30 volunteers, including law students, to create teams that will be matched with 9th grade social studies classes at Ottawa Hills High School. Each team will visit its assigned class once each month for a 55-minute class period, with the schedule set at the beginning of the school year. • Law students will participate in a rotating faculty role, so that all class small groups can have the opportunity to talk to people who may be closer to them in age. Lawyers and law students working together can also model diverse teamwork.
Small Group Focus • Lessons are designed to be taught in small-group discussion format. • Upon arrival, classes will split into 5 small groups of 4-8 students, depending upon class size. Each volunteer will work individually with one group throughout the lesson, with law students rotating among the groups. • The goal is to match volunteers with the same students every month – building on past connections and information to create rapport.
The role of Team Leader Each 3R’s team will have a designated team leader. The leader’s role is to serve as coordinator for the team and liaison between volunteers, the GRBA, and teachers. Team leaders are asked: • to communicate with their teammates • to report to the GRBA with suggestions, issues, and other feedback
Time Management Preparation is key! • Prepared volunteers make the best teachers. Make sure to take the time each month to read over the lesson and student worksheets, and understand the materials and concepts to be covered at least a week before each scheduled visit. • Leaders are encouraged to check in with their teammates one week before each visit to coordinate team representation and check for any concerns or suggestions. Teams may wish to schedule a conference call at a set time each month prior to the lesson for this purpose.

School Information • When you receive your 3Rs assignment at Ottawa Hills High School, you will be given the class time, the teacher’s name and school contact information, and the names and contact information of your fellow teammates. • Your assignment will also include a 1-page information sheet about OHHS, including directions. For more information about GRPS, visit their website at http://www.grps.org/ • The first day, OHHS will direct 3Rs volunteers to the check-in area. If not otherwise indicated, please proceed to security at the school’s main entrance to sign in and be given directions to your classroom. Remember – always bring your ID! Classroom Protocol 3Rs volunteers are welcome guests! • To better foster mutual respect, it helps to think of teachers as partners and students as clients. • Remember that teachers can help you, and will help ensure class time is productive and orderly. • Today’s schools may be different than the high school environments you remember, but the overwhelming majority of the kids are there to learn! 3Rs volunteers have reported that the most gratifying part of the experience is watching the students’ understanding and participation grow: it takes patience, but you are making a difference.
