Early Concepts of International Education MSU 密州大: Land Grant University (赠地法大学),Founded in 1855as Agricultural College(农学院) and became MSU in 1955(密州大) John A. Hannah(约翰汉拿),Michigander,Graduated from MSU in 1923,started to teach at MSU when he was 20, and was president 1941-69 Hannah (1945) “The good will and civic intelligence which can deal with international questions wisely and humanly will have to be developed, not only in the colleges of America, but in the colleges of all the nations of the world. Michigan State College has a responsibility to provide some leadership in this direction.” President Harry Truman (1949 inaugural address) four-point program: make the benefits of our progress available for the improvement of underdeveloped nations.
Vietnam Project and MSUG In 1955MSUG started a technical assistance program in Vietnam headed by Wesley Fishel, a political science professor and Ngo Dinh Diem, President of South Vietnam (1955-1963). Diem was assassinated in 1963. He visited MSU in 1954 at the department’s and Fishel’s invitation. The technical assistance program covers the areas of:public administration and education, police administration, and help in writing a constitution In the fall of 1956, 32 people from MSU worked in Saigon as consultants, and 20 Vietnamese were at MSU in East Lansing for nine months intensive study. Wesley Fishel’s archives is a rich primary collection of part of the history of MSU and South Vietnam in that period.
