  1. VFR Communications Procedures at Uncontrolled Aerodromes With MF and ATF Areas

  2. Uncontrolled Aerodromes • Definitions • VFR Circuit Procedures • Communications (MF and ATF) • NORDO / RONLY

  3. Uncontrolled Aerodromes and Airports An aerodrome or airport without an air traffic control unit in operation

  4. Communications • Mandatory Frequency, Aerodrome Traffic Frequency, Authorized Approach Unicom “What are they !!” and Why Do I Care??

  5. 09 27 UNCONTROLLED AERODROME RECOMMENDED CIRCUIT PROCEDURES VFR without MF • Make descent on upwind side • Cross runway at mid-way, at circuit altitude Departures - proceed straight ahead until clear of circuit before turning right

  6. 09 27 UNCONTROLLED AERODROME RECOMMENDED CIRCUIT PROCEDURES VFR with MF or AAU All of the non-MF procedures plus Departures - proceed straight ahead until clear of circuit before turning right

  7. UNCONTROLLED AERODROME RECOMMENDED CIRCUIT PROCEDURES IS JOINING DOWNIND ALLOWED?? Alternatively, once the pilot has ascertained without any doubt that there will be no conflict with other traffic entering the circuit or traffic established within the circuit, the pilot may also join the circuit on the downwind leg. Ref. : A.I.P. RAC 4.5.2 (a) (ii)

  8. Communications Procedures -Uncontrolled Aerodrome With MF or ATF Area • CARS 602.97 to 602.103 REFERS - • Applies to; • any aircraft on the manoeuvring area • VFR aircraft within an MF area • MF normally associated with AAU, FSS, CARS OR RFSS • Applicable to aerodromes/airports as listed in the CFS As the name suggests, MF use is mandatory. ATF Comm procedures should be used.

  9. Communications Procedures -Uncontrolled Aerodrome Without MF Area • Not covered by any legislation • Recommended - Follow MF procedures • Normally, • If UNICOM station, use published frequency • If no UNICOM 123.2

  10. Communications Equipment Required To Operate in a MF Area A two way radio capable of communications with a ground station and with other aircraft on the MF • Unless ... • Prior notification is given to the affected • Flight Service Station • Make prior arrangements

  11. REPORTS MADE ON M.F. • Address transmissions to the ground station (FSS, CARS, AAU ETC.) • Broadcast • If the station not in operation • If station fails to acknowledge If Broadcasting and Station Acknowledges • Report to Station

  12. ENTERING MANOEUVRING AREA • Report intentions prior to entering (good time to pick up advisory) • Maintain a “listening watch” on MF

  13. REPORTS ON DEPARTURE • Report departure intentions prior to moving onto take-off runway • Ascertain by radio and visual observations that no conflict is likely during take-off • Report departure from the aerodrome traffic circuit and monitor the designated frequency until well clear of the area (5-10 NM)

  14. REPORTS ON ARRIVAL • Report position, altitude, arrival procedure intentions and estimated time of landing at least 5 minutes (where possible) prior to entering the area;  • Maintain listening watch on the designated frequency; • Report joining the circuit pattern giving position in the pattern; • Report on downwind leg, if applicable; • Report established on final approach; and  • Report clear of the active runway after landing.

  15. CONTINUOUS CIRCUITS • Report • Joining the downwind leg; • Established on final approach, stating intentions; and • Clear of the active runway after the final landing.

  16. ENROUTE REPORTS • Prior to entering MF area,** report - (Avoid if possible) • position, • altitude and • intentions • Report clear of MF area Maintain listening watch on MF

  17. NORDO AND RONLY Unplanned Loss of Communications • Must complete 2 sides of circuit before turning final • Maintain a keen watch for traffic REMEMBER - NORDO and RONLY aircraft may operate into or out of MF area with prior notification of FSS, CARS or RCO, providing it is in operation.

  18. Publications • Recommended procedures in the interest of aviation safety can be found in - • Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) • Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) • Posters - TP11541 and TP11962
