Project Description -observed two days in a Spanish class at Mason Creek Middle School in Winston, Ga -three 7th grade classes, two 8th grade classes -19-27 students in each class -all classes have almost even division between white and black students -all students above average—majority gifted -all students chose to enroll in Spanish
Project Findings -students are bored in class because of repetitive instructional style -students talk throughout class -teacher is ineffective and unfair in administering discipline -often dead time in class where students have nothing to do
Jacob Kounin’s Classroom Management Techniques 1-Practice withitness 2-Cope with overlapping situations 3-Maintain class momentum 4-Keep whole class involved 5-Introduce variety and be enthusiastic 6-Be aware of ripple effect
Practical Implications -Teacher’s class management would be more effective if she used Kounin’s techniques. -Many of classroom disruptions could be prevented with a new seating chart. -Class management affects student learning
