Roger von Oech has identified 10 mental blocks to creativity The following information is taken from his book
A major oil company was concerned about the lack of creative productivity among its engineers. To deal with this problem, a team of psychologists was brought in to find out what differentiated the creative people from the less creative ones. After three months of study, the psychologists found that the chief differentiating factor that separated the two groups was:
The creative people thought they were creative, and the less creative people didn’t think they were.
Mental Blocks • The right answer • That’s not logical • Follow the rules • Be practical • Play is frivolous • That’s not my area • Don’t be foolish • Avoid ambiguity • To err is wrong • I’m not creative
Self-Fulfilling Prophecies • Johnny Carson’s joke on the Tonight Show • Grade school teacher in New York
I’m not creative The worlds of thought and action overlap. What you think has a way of becoming true. If you want to be more creative, believe in the worth of your ideas, and have the persistence to continue building on them.
I’m not creative With this attitude, you’ll take more risks, and break the rules occasionally. You’ll look for more than one right answer, explore for ideas outside your area, tolerate ambiguity, be foolish every now and then, play a little bit, engage in asking “what if” questions, and be motivated to go beyond the status quo.
