Master Technology TeacherCertificationWhat is it? • Created by 77th Texas legislature to ensure that there are teachers with special training to work with other teachers and students to increase the use of technology in each classroom • Legislation states “whose primary duties include serving as a technology training mentor to other teachers for the amount of time and in the manner established by the district”

MTT Eligibility Must meet one of the following: • Hold a technology applications or Technology Education certificate OR • Hold a teaching certificate and have 3 years of teaching experience • Check your certification at https://secure.sbec.state.tx.us/virtcert/ AND must meet BOTH of the following: • Satisfactorily complete an SBEC approved MTT program AND • Pass the MTT certification examination

MTT Implementation • Certification began Summer of 2003 • This MTT Academy is part of the SBEC approved program that Region One is offering in conjunction with University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) • The State Board of Educator Certification approved the Region One/UTB MTT Certification program at its May 2003 meeting

  5. Why MTT? • Some districts will require that all campus technologists be MTT certified • Some districts are considering a local stipend for MTT certification (if legislature does not fund state stipend)

Advantages of MTT • Provide leadership on your campus and in your district • Influence and mentor colleagues as they implement technology based instruction • Provide professional development at the district/campus • Assist the district’s special education department with the implementation of computer-related “Assistive Technology” • May provide career opportunities

  7. What Does the Region One/UTBMTT Program Look Like?

Region One/UTB MTTProgram Requirements • 4 day Pre-MTT Assessment with Region One • 4 online courses with UTB • Courses were co-designed to assure that all MTT Standards are addressed • Courses count towards UTB Masters in Educational Technology • 4 day Post-MTT Academy with Region One • Successfully completion of the MTT Certification examination

  9. UTB Courses EDTC 6340 – Application of Advanced Technologies in the PK-12 Classroom EDTC 6341 – Student-Centered Learning Using Technology EDTC 6342 – Technology Leadership EDTC 6343 – Practicum

MTT Funding Options • All costs assumed by MTT candidate OR • District assumes all or part of cost using: • NCLB Title II, Part D formula or TARGET funding • Technology Allotment Fund • Categorical funds for teachers that service those students (Special Education, Bilingual, others) • Local and other funds • We will work with districts to accommodate cohorts

Cost of MTT Program Approximate costs are: • MTT Academies* $1,050 • UTB Online Graduate Courses (4)** 2,000 • Books and materials (approx.) 400 • Texas Examination for Master Teachers (TexMaT) 72 Total ***$3,522 * A $25 non-refundable fee will be charge for all applicants ** Tuition is subject to change based on university policy. *** This cost does not include the cost of additional textbooks, and possible hardware, software and other materials that might be required or the cost that may result from and unsuccessful attempt to pass the examination.

Projected Timeline • Application window is open • Pre-MTT Assessment Academy • Face to Face June 7-11, 2004 • NEW ONLINE PRE-ASSESSMENT window opens June 1st-Once you begin you have 5 days to complete all projects and assessments • Results available July for Fall Registration • Full acceptance- may take up to two courses per semester • Provisional acceptance-may take only one course per semester • Not recommended at this time-candidate may work with a Region One to develop a plan to gain admittance

Why chooseRegion One/UTB MTT Program? • Total 2 academies (8 days) and only 4 online courses • Courses can be used as electives in a M.Ed program in Technology Integration • Online delivery of coursework • Prescriptive Pre-MTT Assessment Academy focuses on assuring necessary technical skills are in place • Excellent opportunity to gain certification • If you already have a masters • If you do not intend to pursue a masters degree

FAQ • Do I have to go to Region One for the Pre and Post Academies? • Currently, yes and no. • We will do on-site academies hosted away from the service center under special conditions for groups of 15 or more. An additional on-site fee may be applied. • Pre-Assessment is now available ONLINE • Post-Academy currently requires face-to-face • Why can’t I take more than one/two courses? • Time and the intensive nature of the courses. • How hard are the courses? • These are online graduate courses. You should plan to spend 9 to 15 hours per week for each course.
