Learning Targets • Become familiar with the Year at a Glance pacing guide for 3rd grade • Utilize the Unit Plans to teach the Mathematics CCSS • Gain confidence in teaching new area to third grade: area and perimeter
Common Core Notebooks • Math Section • CCSS & Glossary • Learning Progressions • Unpacking Document • Crosswalk Document
Today’s Materials • Third Grade math CCSS Curriculum Card (pink cardstock) • Third Grade Year at a Glance pacing guide • Common Core detailed Math Units (Planning Guides) • DPI Area and Perimeter Unit • Fraction Lessons • Van de Walle shapes
Standards for Mathematical Practice 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Reasoning and Explaining Overarching habits of mind of a productive mathematical thinker. 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • 6. Attend to precision Modeling and Using Tools 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Seeing Structure and Generalizing *p. 3 Unpacking Document
Mathematical Practices Mathematical practices describe the habits of mind of mathematically proficient students. In your classroom, • Who is doing the talking? • Who is doing the thinking? • Who is doing the math?
Investigations and the CCSSM • Companion materials to Investigations Investigations and the Common Core State Standards • Each grade level resource book contains: • An instructional plan for adapting existing content and adding new content • Teacher and student materials for new content • Sessions, Classroom Routines/TMM, Teaching/PD Notes, Resource Masters, Assessments • Detailed correlations between Investigations and Mathematical Practices and Content Standards • “Snap-in” Instructional Plan Tabs for each unit

Before we begin…. Our journey through the ten 3rd grade CCSS units We have a mission for you! As you we are going through the units together locate all the places that incorporate algebra throughout the curriculum. You may find these in the standards, learning targets, activities, etc. You may be rewarded handsomely!
Unit 1 – Place Value Place Value Unit
Unit 2 – Data Analysis Data Analysis Unit
Unit 3 – Addition and Subtraction Addition and Subtraction
Unit 4 - Perimeter Perimeter Unit
Unit 5 – Multiplication and Division Multiplication and Division Unit

Unit 6 – Measurement: Area and Perimeter Measurement: Area and Perimeter Unit
NCDPI Unit • Unit was developed by DPI using research based best practices because this standard is new to 3rd grade • RCS decided to include this DPI unit as part of our yearlong plan because the lessons address the area and perimeter standards and math practices in clear, thoughtful, and developmentally appropriate lessons • Each lesson includes: Common Core Standards addressed, Mathematical Practices addressed, learning targets (goals), vocabulary, lesson outline, materials, etc.
DPI Lesson 3 Unit plans indicate you should skip lessons 1 & 2 and begin with lesson 3. Let’s look at the features of each lesson within this DPI unit.
DPI Unit Jigsaw Read your assigned Lesson Create a poster to share the following with the group: • Which CCSS are addressed? • Which Mathematical Practices will students be using? • What are the goals of the lesson? • What is the activity? • What will you or your students find challenging about the lesson?
Take a break…! …10 minutes
Unit 7 - Fractions Fractions Unit
Unit 8 – 2-D Geometry Unit 2-D Geometry Unit
Unit 9 – Algebra and Problem Solving Unit Problem Solving Unit
Unit 10 – Measurement: Liquid Volume, Mass, and Time Measurement Unit
Your mission: How did you do? Share with us where you found algebra in the Unit Planning guides.
Testing – What will the Math EOG look like? Test will be EOG format testing CC Standards Format will be paper and pencil, multiple choice, four answer choices.
