  2. Legally, the disabled are entitled to make “reasonable modifications” to their homes- whether they be renters or homeowners Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988

Your Landlord MAY NOT • Refuse to let you make reasonable modifications to your dwelling or common use areas, at your expense, if necessary, for the disabled person to use the housing. • Refuse to make reasonable accommodations in rules, policies, practices or services if necessary for the disabled person to use the housing.

  4. WestchesterAccess to Home Our intention is to promote independentliving and improve individuals’ quality of life

  5. Who Qualifies? • Renters and Homeowners who have a permanent physical disability or have difficulty with daily living activities. • No Age restrictions • Frail Elderly are eligible

  6. Types of Projects • Wheelchair ramps • Widening doorways

  7. Types of Projects • Changes to bathroom including grab-bars and allowing for wheelchair access. • Non-skid flooring • Appliances that responds to voice commands • Lowered/Easy to reach kitchen adaptations

  11. Types of Projects • Specialized thermostatic controls • Installation of smoke/Carbon monoxide/burglar alarms for the hearing impaired. • First floor bedroom/bathroom relocation • And many more….

  13. What WRO Will Do • Pay for equipment • Pay for labor • Pay for permit • Pay for architectural drawing if necessary • May pay up to $25,000 per project

Beginning the Application Process Application are available from WRO by calling (914) 428-4507 ext. 315 OR call Westchester Disabled on the Move at (914) 968-4717 OR call Westchester Independent Living Center at (914) 683-3926 These organizations will interview applicants and help provide other necessary social services

  15. YES YOU CAN…. HELP TO MAKE FAIR HOUSING A REALITY FOR ALL! • Become a part-time fair housing tester. • Work throughout Westchester, Putnam and Rockland Counties. • Testers who wish to be paid receive $11.00 per hour plus travel expenses. • WRO provides comprehensive training for all testers.
