History of Gatorade • 1965: A university of Florida assistant coach asked why the players were being affected by heat and heat related illnesses • Researchers noticed that fluids and electrolytes that players lost weren’t being replenished by water alone • They then took these findings to the lab and formulated a new precisely balanced carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage to replenish their Gator players (hence the name) • Soon after the players started consuming the beverage, sure enough they began winning

History of Gatorade Cont. • The team’s success progressed through the 1966 season with the Gators finishing at 9-2 and winning the Orange Bowl for the first time in the school’s history • Word about Gatorade spread and both University of Richmond and Miami of Ohio began ordering batches of Gatorade for their football teams • 1969: Coach Ray Graves of the Florida Gators suggested to the Kansas City Chiefs that they use Gatorade • 1983: Gatorade became the official sports drink of the NFL, a title still held to this day • Gatorade is now also the official sports drink of the NBA, AVP, and PGA, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, and numerous other elite and professional organizations and teams.
